{"id":79023,"date":"2016-07-24T00:35:18","date_gmt":"2016-07-24T04:35:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/?p=79023"},"modified":"2016-07-24T21:24:36","modified_gmt":"2016-07-25T01:24:36","slug":"calgary-man-detained-turkey-accused-plotting-failed-coup-friend-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/2016\/07\/24\/calgary-man-detained-turkey-accused-plotting-failed-coup-friend-says\/","title":{"rendered":"Calgary man detained in Turkey accused of plotting failed coup, friend says"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"getty embed image\" style=\"background-color: #fff;font-family: 'Helvetica Neue',Helvetica,Arial,sans-serif;color: #a7a7a7;font-size: 11px;width: 100%;max-width: 594px\">\n<div style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;text-align: left\"><a style=\"color: #a7a7a7;text-decoration: none;font-weight: normal !important;border: none\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gettyimages.com\/detail\/576537424\" target=\"_blank\">Embed from Getty Images<\/a><\/div>\n<div style=\"overflow: hidden;height: 0;padding: 66.666667% 0 0 0;width: 100%\"><\/div>\n<p style=\"margin: 0\">\n<\/div>\n<p>TORONTO\u2014The family of a Canadian man they say is being held in Turkey on accusations he was a leader of the failed July 15 military coup is trying to get Davud Hanci&#8217;s wife and children out of the country.<\/p>\n<p>The family says Hanci was detained and his name has appeared in Turkish media in connection with the coup attempt.<\/p>\n<p>Selman Durmus, the brother of Hanci&#8217;s wife Rumeysa Hanci, says she called her family in Toronto as her husband was being arrested.<\/p>\n<p>Durmus last spoke to his sister Sunday morning and says she isn&#8217;t being held, but he and his family are concerned for her and her two young sons&#8217; safety, and want to bring them back to Canada.<\/p>\n<p>Hanci, who lives in Calgary and works as an imam for Correctional Service Canada and Alberta correctional services, went to Turkey for a holiday with his wife and children on July 7.<\/p>\n<p>Durmus says the family travelled to the Turkish city of Trabzon to visit Hanci&#8217;s ailing father. He says his sister is a dual Canadian-Turkish citizen, and the couple&#8217;s sons were born in Canada.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs far as we know, at the moment she is OK. But she does feel in danger,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Turkish media reports claim Hanci\u2014who a family friend says is a dual citizen of Canada and Turkey\u2014is from Pennsylvania and was working for U.S.-based cleric Fethullah Gulen, a critic and former ally of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Durmus said Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>Durmus said he watched Turkish media reports that called Hanci \u201cthe right-hand man\u201d of Fethullah Gulen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMedia sources are saying &#8216;the mastermind of the coup attack.&#8217; &#8230; This guy is just a regular guy. He just went to visit his father.
