I&#39;m honoured to welcome President <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/EPN?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@EPN<\/a> to Canada. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/pZ7jYR6KJ0\">pic.twitter.com\/pZ7jYR6KJ0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Justin Trudeau (@JustinTrudeau) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JustinTrudeau\/status\/747593613350154241?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 28, 2016<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>TORONTO \u2013 Prime Minister Justin Trudeau welcomed his Mexican counterpart to Canada on Monday, saying the two leaders would have much to talk about in the coming days, including the flow of people and goods.<\/p>\n<p>Trudeau greeted President Enrique Pe\u00f1a Nieto on arrival at Toronto\u2019s landmark Casa Loma castle before hosting a banquet attended by about 300 guests.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCanada and Mexico are more than just friends,\u201d Trudeau said in welcoming remarks. \u201cWe are partners. And it\u2019s what we share as partners and friends that I\u2019d like to celebrate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He made a point of thanking Mexico for sending 41 firefighters to Fort McMurray, Alta., to help fight the massive wildfires there last month. That help is what good neighbours do and is much appreciated, Trudeau said.<\/p>\n<p>The prime minister said the two men would talk about finding solutions to climate change and working toward better protection for the environment.<\/p>\n<p>The two countries have economic interests in common and both understand the importance of a productive and respectful relationship that allows for greater trade, stronger growth and more job creation, Trudeau said.<\/p>\n<p>Trudeau said many Canadians travel south for Mexican culture, cuisine and \u201ca slightly more hospitable climate,\u201d while Mexican students come north to study in this country.<\/p>\n<p>The prime minister said it was hard to believe that more than six years have passed since Canada last welcomed a Mexican president on a state visit.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking in Spanish, Pe\u00f1a Nieto called the visit and renewal of bilateral relations a \u201clandmark in history.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou are taking it further,\u201d he said to Trudeau. \u201cIt\u2019s not just about co-operation and the economy, we\u2019re here to deepen our friendship.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The president called Canada and Mexico \u201csister countries,\u201d noting 96,000 Mexicans live in Canada \u2013 the second-largest Mexican diaspora. About 60,000 Canadians make his country home, Pe\u00f1a Nieto said.<\/p>\n<p>Pe\u00f1a Nieto talked about legal and orderly immigration, and said indigenous peoples strengthen both countries.
