{"id":77646,"date":"2016-06-21T05:50:53","date_gmt":"2016-06-21T09:50:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/?p=77646"},"modified":"2016-06-21T05:50:53","modified_gmt":"2016-06-21T09:50:53","slug":"carmakers-canadian-governments-tackling-electric-car-range-anxiety","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/2016\/06\/21\/carmakers-canadian-governments-tackling-electric-car-range-anxiety\/","title":{"rendered":"Carmakers, Canadian governments tackling electric car range anxiety"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_77647\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-77647\" style=\"width: 724px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Mini-electric-car.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-77647\" src=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Mini-electric-car.png\" alt=\"(Photo: Veselina Dzhingarova\/Flickr)\" width=\"724\" height=\"542\" srcset=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Mini-electric-car.png 724w, https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Mini-electric-car-300x225.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 724px) 100vw, 724px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-77647\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">(Photo: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/99852712@N04\/\" target=\"_blank\">Veselina Dzhingarova<\/a>\/Flickr)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>MONTREAL \u2013 Automakers are hoping to overcome the biggest roadblock to electric vehicles sales \u2013 range anxiety among consumers \u2013 with a little help from government.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesman for Ford Canada said Monday that government efforts to extend the network of recharging stations along highways and elsewhere is a big psychological boost in helping consumers overcome range anxiety, even though the typical Canadian urban commute is far shorter than the travelling range of many of today\u2019s plug-in vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c(With) both the federal government and provincial governments working together to develop the infrastructure you\u2019ll see range anxiety eventually disappear,\u201d Marc Vejgman, Ford&#8217;s product marketing manager, said in an interview at a global electric vehicle conference in Montreal.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, new products from the automakers themselves are starting to bring more consumers around.<\/p>\n<p>Nissan says sales of its popular Leaf plug-in surged 50 per cent when it introduced a more powerful battery last November that boosted the car&#8217;s range by 27 per cent to 172 kilometres.<\/p>\n<p>Ford is planning to introduce a new battery this fall that will increase the range of its all-electric Focus by 31 per cent to 160 km.<\/p>\n<p>Nissan said it believes new technology can double the Leaf\u2019s range in three years and add hundreds of kilometres over time.<\/p>\n<p>But Kazuo Yajima, alliance global director of the company\u2019s electric vehicle engineering division, said efforts to add more range needs to be tempered with reducing vehicle costs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe cannot rely on the (government) subsidies or incentives forever,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Quebec Premier Philippe Couillard said Quebec\u2019s $8,000 subsidy for the purchase of electric vehicles will only be phased out when sales hit a critical mass and prices fall.<\/p>\n<p>B.C. offers a $5,000 subsidy and Ontario provides up to $14,000 in incentives as it aims for electric cars to make up five per cent of new vehicle sales by 2020.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s hard for me to tell you at what moment we will be able to decrease the incentives,\u201d Couillard told reporters, adding that the sale of electric and hybrid cars generates returns for the provincial economy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you fill up you car with gasoline you basically encourage oil exporters \u2013 also of course Canadian oil producers \u2013 but if you charge your electric car you send money directly through Hydro-Quebec and recycle it in Quebec\u2019s economy,\u201d he said<\/p>\n<p>Electric cars are a niche market with less than one per cent of global auto sales. More than 21,000 plug-in electric vehicles have been sold in Canada since 2011. The plug-in hybrid Chevy Volt leads, followed by the all-electric Tesla Model S and Nissan Leaf. Together they account for almost 70 per cent of sales.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Quebec announced Monday that it will greatly increase the number of fast-charge stations for electric vehicles along one of the province&#8217;s busiest highways. Quick-charging stations will be added in two phases in six communities along the 580-kilometre stretch of Highway 20 between Montreal and Mont-Joli.<\/p>\n<p>Couillard said the announcement demonstrates the province\u2019s drive to encourage the use of such vehicles and reduce greenhouse gases.
