(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/frsocratesvillegas\" target=\"_blank\">Facebook photo<\/a>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>MANILA\u2014After being mum in the past few days, one of the highest officials of the Catholic Church broke his silence in the midst of criticisms from President-elect Rodrigo Duterte.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement entitled, \u201cUnderstanding Silence\u201d released on Sunday, Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Socrates Villegas said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is virtue in silence. There is virtue in speech. Wisdom is knowing when it is time for silence and when is the timing for speech.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added, \u201cMine is the silence of Jesus before the arrogance of Pilate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The head of the Catholic Bishops\u2019 Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) noted, \u201cThere is nobility in silence like the silence of the lambs brought to slaughter in the temple to atone for sins.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Villegas said, \u201cYou can understand my speech if you speak the language of silence.
