MANILA\u2014If elected to the nation’s two highest positions during the May 9 elections, the tandem of PDP-LABAN standard bearer Rodrigo Duterte and Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano pledged to exercise political will in ensuring that coco levy fund will reach its intended beneficiaries.<\/p>\n

Cayetano made this assurance during his recent \u201cRonda-Serye\u201d listening tour with coconut farmers in Lucena City, Quezon Thursday.<\/p>\n

During the dialogue, the farmers voiced out their long-standing plight regarding the delayed distribution of the multibillion-peso fund.<\/p>\n

Cayetano, for his part, stressed that the government\u2019s continuous inaction in giving back the money to the farmers has become \u201ccriminal.<\/p>\n

He further lamented how previous administrations failed to recover the shares that went to Eduardo \u201cDanding\u201d Cojuangco Jr.\u2019s San Miguel Corporation (SMC).<\/p>\n

\u201cIf many candidates are afraid of Danding Cojuangco, Mayor Duterte and I are not. And while they keep on making promises they can’t keep, Mayor Duterte and I will just do it, we will just get things done for our poor farmers,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The tandem earlier signed a three-point manifesto, which aims to end what they described as \u201ca systemic oppression of small coconut farmers.\u201d<\/p>\n

They vowed to distribute the funds to the beneficiaries during the first 100 days of their term. They will do this by pushing for a legislation that will create a perpetual trust fund for coconut farmers.<\/p>\n

Aside from the coco levy fund, Cayetano said they would also tap Php1 billion from the national budget to serve as a Coconut Modernization Fund, to be used for the development of the country\u2019s coconut industry.<\/p>\n
