{"id":73426,"date":"2016-04-02T04:58:24","date_gmt":"2016-04-02T08:58:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/?p=73426"},"modified":"2016-04-02T04:58:24","modified_gmt":"2016-04-02T08:58:24","slug":"tetangco-phl-banking-system-remains-sound-stable","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/2016\/04\/02\/tetangco-phl-banking-system-remains-sound-stable\/","title":{"rendered":"Tetangco : PHL banking system remains sound, stable"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_10675\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10675\" style=\"width: 468px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/bangko-sentral-ng-pilipinas.jpeg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-10675\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-10675\" src=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/bangko-sentral-ng-pilipinas.jpeg\" alt=\"Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (Wikipedia photo)\" width=\"468\" height=\"351\" srcset=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/bangko-sentral-ng-pilipinas.jpeg 468w, https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/bangko-sentral-ng-pilipinas-300x225.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 468px) 100vw, 468px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-10675\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (Wikipedia photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>MANILA \u2013 The Philippines\u2019 banking system \u201cremains operationally sound and fundamentally strong,\u201d despite the controversy being faced by some players, the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) said Friday.<\/p>\n<p>The strength is proven by mainstream indicators on capitalization, asset quality, and steady growth of assets, deposits and loans, it pointed out in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>As of end-September 2015, the universal and commercial banks\u2019 (U\/KBs) capital adequacy ratio (CAR), a gauge of their financial soundness, stood at 15.5 percent.<\/p>\n<p>Bulk, or 83 percent of their capitalization, is composed of Common Equity Tier 1 (CET1), which it cited as having \u201cthe highest quality among instruments eligible as bank capital.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Non-performing loans (NPLs) remain low at only 1.6 percent of U\/KBs\u2019 total loan portfolio as of end-December 2015.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe key foundation of the banking system\u2019s strength has been the pursuit of pro-active reforms on risk management practices, capital build-up, corporate governance, financial inclusion, financial literacy and consumer protection,\u201d the central bank said.<\/p>\n<p>The BSP said it was mandated to implement a comprehensive risk-based approach that was aligned with international best practices, including the Basel Committee\u2019s standards, which in turn was focused on assuring financial public of the safety and soundness of individual banks through periodic on-site and off-site supervisions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe BSP\u2019s track record demonstrates the will to decisively act by meting sanctions on erring bank directors and officers, restricting imprudent activities, prohibiting unsafe or unsound practices, and even shutting down banks,\u201d BSP Governor Amando Tetangco Jr. said.<\/p>\n<p>He said the BSP continued to team-up with other government agencies to ensure financial stability as a prudential objective.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn our own and as a collective body with other financial regulators, we have also focused specifically on the potential build-up of systemic risks,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe issues that we have been assessing covers quite a bit of ground, but they are inter-related by the common strand that they can create co-mingled risks that can be systemic in nature,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Thus, the creation of the central bank\u2019s Financial Stability Committee, which is composed of senior central bank officials;
