No explosives were found.<\/p>\n<p>Elabi doesn&#8217;t face any criminal charges for now, but the Crown wants him to sign a peace bond due to causing terror fears.<\/p>\n<p>The measure restricts the activities of possible criminals and allows authorities to keep a close eye on them. Prosecutors have sought the bond against several Canadians in the past year.<\/p>\n<p>Alexandre Goyette, Elabi&#8217;s lawyer, says his client doesn&#8217;t agree with the prosecution.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s not an accusation for which there will be a criminal record,\u201d Goyette said of the bond. \u201cBut he&#8217;s not recognizing the fact he would have created fear for a terrorist action.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Elabi briefly appeared in court while the Crown outlined seven conditions, including limiting his Internet access; forbidding his use of IP-blocking technology; prohibiting him from consulting online terrorist doctrine; and forbidding him from possessing weapons.<\/p>\n<p>Asked by the judge if he would comply with the rules, Elabi replied, \u201cof course,\u201d as his father looked on from the public gallery.<\/p>\n<p>Goyette described Elabi as a student without a previous criminal record who was in shock over the reaction.<\/p>\n<p>He declined to speculate whether the incident was a prank gone awry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe had no criminal intention,\u201d Goyette said. \u201cHe was very surprised by the number of police officers implicated in the file.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Montreal police said Tuesday the \u201cnature of the threat\u201d led to RCMP and Quebec provincial police involvement.<\/p>\n<p>Elabi&#8217;s older brother, Sami Elabi, is an alleged Canadian jihadist who has been fighting in Syria since 2013 according to various reports and whose name has come up in legal proceedings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know some of his family members are known to the media but he (Omar) wasn&#8217;t known to any police service,\u201d said Goyette.<\/p>\n<p>The case returns to court May 30.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MONTREAL\u2014A man who was arrested after a Montreal police operation that was triggered by a video he allegedly published is &hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":33,"featured_media":65579,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[18,16],"tags":[381,1485,9990,6161],"class_list":["post-73332","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-news-ca","category-news","tag-arrest","tag-montreal","tag-omar-elabi","tag-terrorism-threat","mauthors-sidhartha-banerjee","mauthors-the-canadian-press"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/73332","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/33"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=73332"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/73332\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/65579"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=73332"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=73332"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=73332"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
