{"id":71968,"date":"2016-03-09T22:45:44","date_gmt":"2016-03-10T03:45:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/?p=71968"},"modified":"2016-03-09T22:45:44","modified_gmt":"2016-03-10T03:45:44","slug":"rachel-notley-under-fire-after-ex-union-negotiator-hired-to-bargain-with-unions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/2016\/03\/09\/rachel-notley-under-fire-after-ex-union-negotiator-hired-to-bargain-with-unions\/","title":{"rendered":"Rachel Notley under fire after ex union negotiator hired to bargain with unions"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_22816\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-22816\" style=\"width: 864px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Rchael-Notley-NDP.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-22816\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-22816\" src=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Rchael-Notley-NDP.jpg\" alt=\"Edmonton Strathcona MLA Rachel Notley (Photo courtesy of Notley's Facebook page)\" width=\"864\" height=\"486\" srcset=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Rchael-Notley-NDP.jpg 864w, https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Rchael-Notley-NDP-300x168.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 864px) 100vw, 864px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-22816\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Edmonton Strathcona MLA Rachel Notley (Photo courtesy of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/rachelnotley\/\" target=\"_blank\">Notley&#8217;s Facebook page<\/a>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>EDMONTON\u2014Premier Rachel Notley is being criticized for hiring a former senior negotiator with Alberta&#8217;s largest public-sector union.<\/p>\n<p>Wildrose finance critic Derek Fildebrandt says hiring Kevin Davediuk will be bad news for taxpayers given the NDP&#8217;s traditional ties with unions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe government has hired one of AUPE&#8217;s chief negotiators to now negotiate for taxpayers back against AUPE,\u201d Fildebrandt said Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is little better than hiring the fox to guard the hen house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Up until Monday, Davediuk worked for the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees, which represents thousands of workers in a wide variety of government jobs.<\/p>\n<p>Finance Minister Joe Ceci said Davediuk was picked because he was the best person for the job and has a distinguished career working for unions and for employers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe certainly has a breadth of experience,\u201d said Ceci.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHaving the best people at the table is in the best interests of all of us, in terms of ensuring we don&#8217;t pay more (than needed), \u201c<\/p>\n<p>Ceci said Davediuk will bow out of some negotiations with the AUPE.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are parts of the negotiations that he&#8217;s done in the past that he probably can&#8217;t be involved with, but there&#8217;s a lot of work we need to do and many union (negotiations) that are coming up over the next few years in particular that need to be settled,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Notley&#8217;s government faces difficult bargaining with all of its public sector unions, including AUPE, nurses, teachers and doctors and other specialists as low oil prices have seen government revenues plunge.<\/p>\n<p>The government is predicting this year&#8217;s budget will include a $10-billion deficit and the government is facing calls to either freeze or roll back public sector salaries.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>EDMONTON\u2014Premier Rachel Notley is being criticized for hiring a former senior negotiator with Alberta&#8217;s largest public-sector union.
