{"id":71740,"date":"2016-03-02T01:59:45","date_gmt":"2016-03-02T06:59:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/?p=71740"},"modified":"2016-03-02T01:59:45","modified_gmt":"2016-03-02T06:59:45","slug":"senate-committee-report-takes-aim-at-fruit-juice-in-canadas-food-guide","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/2016\/03\/02\/senate-committee-report-takes-aim-at-fruit-juice-in-canadas-food-guide\/","title":{"rendered":"Senate committee report takes aim at fruit juice in Canada\u2019s Food Guide"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_71750\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-71750\" style=\"width: 840px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Juice.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-71750\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-71750\" src=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Juice.png\" alt=\"(Photo by Rob Bertholf\/Flickr)\" width=\"840\" height=\"556\" srcset=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Juice.png 840w, https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Juice-300x199.png 300w, https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Juice-768x508.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 840px) 100vw, 840px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-71750\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">(Photo by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/robbertholf\/\" target=\"_blank\">Rob Bertholf<\/a>\/Flickr)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>OTTAWA \u2013 Canada\u2019s Food Guide, which presents fruit juice as a healthy choice, is in need of an drastic overhaul to help combat the country\u2019s obesity crisis, a Senate committee warned Tuesday as it released findings of a study spanning more than a year.<\/p>\n<p>The report paints a bleak picture of Canadians plagued with conditions linked to excess weight and takes direct aim at Health Canada&#8217;s recommendations on juices most commonly served at breakfast tables.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCanada\u2019s dated food guide is no longer effective in providing nutritional guidance to Canadians,\u201d the report said. \u201cFruit juice, for instance, is presented as a health item, when it is little more than a soft drink without the bubbles.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The report, which pegs the cost of obesity at between $4.6-billion and $7.1-billion a year in health-care needs and lost productivity, also suggested the committee got an earful on the failings of the food guide.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeveral witnesses suggested that Canada\u2019s Food Guide has been at best ineffective and, at worst enabling,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n<p>An overhauled food guide should be based on the latest science and must make strong statements about restricting consumption of highly processed foods, the study added.<\/p>\n<p>It is critical that the federal government act to address the obesity epidemic, committee chair Sen. Kelvin Ogilvie said Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can\u2019t sugar-coat it any longer,\u201d he said. \u201cThe obesity crisis is real.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A significant reduction in sugar consumption would go a long way toward promoting normal body weight and improved health, he added.<\/p>\n<p>The report also suggested the government should consider a ban on advertising food and drinks to children and a possible tax on sugar-sweetened beverages.<\/p>\n<p>Not surprisingly, industry quickly shot back Tuesday after the report was released.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, the Canadian Beverage Association rejected the sweetened-beverage tax option and said the drinks make up a small portion of calories in Canadian diets.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCanada\u2019s beverage companies already voluntarily provide a clear calorie label on the front of all of our products, in addition to what Health Canada requires as part of food labelling requirements,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n<p>There are other offenders in the diet that contribute to weight gain and the development of chronic disease, but perhaps none as clearly identifiable as sugar-sweetened beverages, said Ottawa-based obesity specialist Dr. Yoni Freedhoff.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese are products we should be discouraging the consumption of and one of the levers that government has to utilize to help discourage the consumption of products that are themselves not good for the health of the population are taxes,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe see that with alcohol, we see that with tobacco and I\u2019m hoping we will be seeing it soon with sugar-sweetened beverages as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In an interview with The Canadian Press, Health Minister Jane Philpott said the Liberal government is reviewing the tax proposal but noted there are no current plans to introduce it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m constantly surveying the landscape to look at how we can make sure that we encourage Canadians to have&#8230; healthy eating and drinking habits and so this is something that I\u2019m certainly following closely,\u201d she said. \u201cWe will continue to review it going forward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The fruit juice issue is also on the government\u2019s radar, Philpott added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is reason to be concerned about the sugar content of juice for sure and certainly any good dietician will tell you that it is best if we don\u2019t drink our calories,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>The Senate committee findings, which follow a study conducted between February 2014 and June 2015, suggest that without government action, the obesity problem will only get worse.<\/p>\n<p>The numbers are already soaring \u2013 the number of obese adults in Canada has doubled since 1980 while the number of obese kids has tripled, the report said.<\/p>\n<p>Each year, 48,000 to 66,000 Canadians die from conditions linked to excess weight, it added.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>OTTAWA \u2013 Canada\u2019s Food Guide, which presents fruit juice as a healthy choice, is in need of an drastic overhaul &hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":33,"featured_media":71750,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[69],"tags":[9636],"class_list":["post-71740","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-food","tag-cp","mauthors-kristy-kirkup","mauthors-the-canadian-press"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/71740","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/33"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=71740"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/71740\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/71750"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=71740"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=71740"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=71740"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
