{"id":70408,"date":"2016-02-11T03:23:31","date_gmt":"2016-02-11T08:23:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/?p=70408"},"modified":"2016-02-11T03:23:31","modified_gmt":"2016-02-11T08:23:31","slug":"marcos-stresses-importance-of-lgu-executives-role-in-nation-building","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/2016\/02\/11\/marcos-stresses-importance-of-lgu-executives-role-in-nation-building\/","title":{"rendered":"Marcos stresses importance of LGU executives\u2019 role in nation building"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_60123\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-60123\" style=\"width: 587px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/P8120745.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-60123\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-60123\" src=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/P8120745.jpg\" alt=\"Senator Ferdinand &quot;Bongbong&quot; Marcos Jr. (Photo from Marcos' website)\" width=\"587\" height=\"440\" srcset=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/P8120745.jpg 587w, https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/P8120745-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 587px) 100vw, 587px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-60123\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Senator Ferdinand &#8220;Bongbong&#8221; Marcos Jr. (Photo from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bongbongmarcos.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Marcos&#8217; website<\/a>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>MANILA\u2014Vice presidential candidate and Senator Ferdinand \u2018Bongbong\u2019 Marcos Jr. has underscored the need to recognize the role of the Local Government Unit (LGU) leaders in involving the people in nation building.<\/p>\n<p>\u201dYou are the ones who deliver services to the people and that\u2019s why I have high respect to our local executives,\u201d Marcos said in his message during the League of Municipalities of the Philippines (LMP) General Assembly at the Grand Ballroom of Marriott Hotel in Pasay City last Tuesday night.<\/p>\n<p>To empower the local executives to work hard, Marcos said the national government should increase the financial support to the LGUs by possibly increasing their Internal Revenue Allotment (IRA) share from 40 to 50 percent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201dThis is in recognition of the hard work and sacrifices of the LGU executivess,\u201d Marcos said, drawing applause from the local leaders.<\/p>\n<p>Marcos, who served as local executive in his home province of Ilocos Norte for nine years, promised to push his proposal to increase the IRA share of the LGUs if elected vice president in the May 9 polls.<\/p>\n<p>In a media interview, Marcos said a federalism form of government is another way to empower the LGUs and bring the economic development to the different parts of the country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201dOne idea of federalism is to let the LGUs operate the government, take initiatives and raise their own funding without relying too much on the national government,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Marcos was just one of the national candidates who took the opportunity to present their platforms of government to the local executives led by their LMP national president Mayor Sandy Javier.<\/p>\n<p>Other national candidates present during the evening event included reelectionist Senator Ralph Recto and senatorial aspirants Isko Moreno, Riza Hontiveros, Leila de Lima, Jericho Petilla, Roman Romulo, Mark Lapid and former Senators Juan Miguel Zubiri and Francis \u2018Kiko\u2019 Pangilinan.<\/p>\n<p>In the morning event, President Benigno S.
