{"id":68950,"date":"2016-01-14T21:08:35","date_gmt":"2016-01-15T02:08:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/?p=68950"},"modified":"2016-01-14T22:59:35","modified_gmt":"2016-01-15T03:59:35","slug":"former-manitoba-fire-commissioner-pleads-guilty-to-breach-of-trust-forgery","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/2016\/01\/14\/former-manitoba-fire-commissioner-pleads-guilty-to-breach-of-trust-forgery\/","title":{"rendered":"Former Manitoba fire commissioner pleads guilty to breach of trust, forgery"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/chris-jones-fire-commissioner.gif\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-68992\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-68992\" src=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/chris-jones-fire-commissioner-300x169.gif\" alt=\"chris-jones-fire-commissioner\" width=\"591\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>WINNIPEG\u2014A former Manitoba fire commissioner has pleaded guilty to breach of trust and forgery in November 2015.<\/p>\n<p>Christopher Jones took up to $50,000 of provincial money, stolen in 21 separate accountable advances between 2009 and 2011.<\/p>\n<p>Jones read a statement in court Thursday apologizing for what he did and said he was not a risk to reoffend.<\/p>\n<p>Court heard that part of the money was used to pay off his personal overdraft.<\/p>\n<p>The Crown said Jones and three subordinates entered false expense claims to clear the advances from the government system.<\/p>\n<p>The three subordinates did not get money for their participation and all were fired from their jobs, but none was charged.<\/p>\n<p>Court heard Jones was going through a \u201cmessy separation\u201d from his former wife at the time.<\/p>\n<p>The defence said Jones had also been diagnosed with cancer when the misuse of funds came to light, at a time when the province and fire commissioner were also dealing with the 2011 flood.<\/p>\n<p>Jones also said in his statement that his actions have \u201ccaused significant public humiliation\u201d to him and his family.<\/p>\n<p>The Crown is asking for 15 months in jail, while the defence wants a conditional sentence with no jail time.<\/p>\n<p>A decision is set for Monday morning.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>WINNIPEG\u2014A former Manitoba fire commissioner has pleaded guilty to breach of trust and forgery in November 2015.
