A Red Cross representative explained how these donations were handled.<\/p>\n<p>According to the representative, \u201cThose contributions have been made into Canadian Red Cross, and those in turn have been put into a restricted fund for direct aid to the people affected by typhoon \u2018Haiyan.\u2019 At last count, they were at CAD $42.6 million.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Brad Eason, the Task Force Surgeon and Commander of the Canadian Armed Forces, also shared his experience in the Philippines.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy the time we landed and started operating in Panay Island, what we saw was primarily roads that were blocked, trees down, power lines down, houses that were completely leveled,\u201d he recalled.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6896\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6896\" style=\"width: 5184px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/IMG_2225.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6896\" alt=\"PCI File Photo\" src=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/IMG_2225.jpg\" width=\"5184\" height=\"3456\" srcset=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/IMG_2225.jpg 5184w, https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/IMG_2225-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/IMG_2225-1024x682.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 5184px) 100vw, 5184px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6896\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>PCI File Photo<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn medical needs, by the time we arrived probably a week after the typhoon, it was minor wounds, infections related to skin conditions, gastrointestinal illnesses related to unclean water, not enough food\u2026 We did not see trauma,\u201d Eason pointed out.<\/p>\n<p>Eason worked with a very eager team.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy team was very excited to be there, highly motivated to give and provide assistance. They all felt quite privileged to have the opportunity to come to the Philippines and help the people,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>When asked about Canada\u2019s preparedness if something like that were to happen, Eason responded, \u201cNot only do we have a lot of military assets that can help.
