BEVERLY HILLS, Calif.\u2014Matt Damon made a winning return to the Golden Globe awards on Sunday night, accepting the trophy for best actor in a motion picture comedy or musical for \u201cThe Martian.\u201d<\/p>\n
It came 18 years after his first and only other Globe win for co-writing the screenplay of \u201cGood Will Hunting\u201d with friend Ben Affleck.<\/p>\n
In \u201cThe Martian,\u201d Damon played an astronaut accidently left behind on Mars by his crew.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe 18-year gap was me working on my singing, which brought me here tonight,\u201d Damon joked backstage in a nod to the odd pairing of the category.<\/p>\n
In his acceptance speech, Damon noted that he’s made \u201ca lot of movies that people just didn’t go see.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is pretty rarefied air,\u201d he said backstage. \u201cI’m going to smell the roses.\u201d<\/p>\n
Damon is headed to Las Vegas on Monday to begin filming the latest installment of the Bourne saga. He said wife Lucy would take his statue home with her.<\/p>\n
On camera, the 45-year-old actor thanked his wife and three daughters, telling them to get ready for bed.<\/p>\n
Damon has been nominated five other times over the years but had not won until this year.<\/p>\n
Looking back, he was asked backstage what advice he would have for his 20-year-old self.<\/p>\n
\u201cI was the most lucky for having great grown-ups in my life who were very wise, who encouraged me to focus on work and not superfluous stuff,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Damon beat out Christian Bale and Steve Carell of \u201cThe Big Short,\u201d Al Pacino of \u201cDanny Collins,\u201d and Mark Ruffalo of \u201cInfinitely Polar Bear.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
