{"id":67781,"date":"2015-12-20T09:45:31","date_gmt":"2015-12-20T14:45:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/?p=67781"},"modified":"2015-12-20T09:45:31","modified_gmt":"2015-12-20T14:45:31","slug":"blackberry-ceo-its-a-social-responsibility-to-vault-privacy-in-some-cases","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/2015\/12\/20\/blackberry-ceo-its-a-social-responsibility-to-vault-privacy-in-some-cases\/","title":{"rendered":"BlackBerry CEO: It\u2019s a \u2018social responsibility\u2019 to vault privacy in some cases"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_67785\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-67785\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/CWhD6nTU4AEMbJL.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-67785\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-67785\" src=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/CWhD6nTU4AEMbJL.jpg\" alt=\"BlackBerry logo\" width=\"600\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/CWhD6nTU4AEMbJL.jpg 600w, https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/CWhD6nTU4AEMbJL-300x150.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-67785\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">BlackBerry logo<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>WATERLOO, Ont. \u2013 BlackBerry\u2019s chief executive John Chen says he stands by a controversial blog post he published earlier this week that outlines when he&#8217;d be willing to hand private customer information over to law enforcement.<\/p>\n<p>The CEO of the Waterloo, Ont.-based company was taken to task by technology websites and commentators over what some deemed as hypocrisy coming from the leader of a brand that pledges security and privacy.<\/p>\n<p>Without pointing Apple out by name on Tuesday, Chen slammed a recent update to Apple\u2019s operating system which makes it impossible for the company to unlock the devices, even if there\u2019s a search warrant for a criminal investigation.<\/p>\n<p>Talking with reporters on Friday, after BlackBerry released its latest financial results, Chen said he wasn\u2019t fazed by the backlash.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI strongly believe that if there are bad elements out there trying to harm society, for one reason or another&#8230; it\u2019s our social responsibility to help,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He also offered some more insight into his post \u2013 highlighting a \u201clongstanding policy\u201d established at BlackBerry before his arrival two years ago, which outlines when the company would be willing to give access to police under a court order.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are going to be able to provide your location, who\u2019s called who, and all of the metadata around that,\u201d he said in a roundtable with reporters.<\/p>\n<p>But he emphasized that BlackBerry wouldn\u2019t give authorities a user\u2019s specific texts or other communication.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe data itself is safe because we never have it,\u201d he said. \u201cWe never save the content.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Data and device encryption has become an hot topic for hardware and software companies in recent years as they weigh the privacy rights of citizens against the possibility their technology is being used by terrorists and criminals to communicate.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, BlackBerry Ltd. (TSX:BB) said it would uphold a promise to shutter its operations in Pakistan rather than accept an overarching demand by the government to give it \u201cunfettered\u201d access to the BlackBerry servers.<\/p>\n<p>BlackBerry has set a deadline of Dec. 30 to make the decision.
