{"id":672,"date":"2014-01-17T04:56:08","date_gmt":"2014-01-17T12:56:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/66.147.244.209\/~canadiu3\/?p=672"},"modified":"2014-01-17T05:10:32","modified_gmt":"2014-01-17T13:10:32","slug":"toronto-area-mayors-to-meet-to-discuss-funding-cleanup-from-december-ice-storm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/2014\/01\/17\/toronto-area-mayors-to-meet-to-discuss-funding-cleanup-from-december-ice-storm\/","title":{"rendered":"Toronto area mayors to meet to discuss funding cleanup from December ice storm"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>MISSISSAUGA, Ont.\u2014Officials from municipalities affected by last month\u2019s devastating ice storm are to meet in Mississauga, Ont., today to discuss funding the cleanup.<\/p>\n<p>Councils in many municipalities\u2014including Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton, and Caledon\u2014have voted to ask the province that they be declared disaster areas.<\/p>\n<p>The storm impacted dozens of communities and officials have said the total bill from the affected municipalities could top $250 million, including $106 million for Toronto alone.<\/p>\n<p>The ice storm downed trees and hydro lines, cutting power to hundreds of thousands for days and stalling road and air travel.<\/p>\n<p>Municipal Affairs and Housing Minister Linda Jeffrey also will attend today\u2019s meeting and Premier Kathleen Wynne says Jeffrey\u2019s ministry has been in touch with all affected municipalities.<\/p>\n<p>The ministry has already begun the process of assessing the requests of municipalities that have contacted it seeking disaster relief.<\/p>\n<p>Toronto has requested that the cleanup costs be split among the city, provincial and federal governments.<\/p>\n<p>Public Safety Canada says requests for financial help must first go to the provincial government, which decides if disaster assistance is warranted and how much it can reasonably pay.<\/p>\n<p>The province can then go to the federal government to seek funding under the Disaster Financial Assistance Arrangements if eligible expenditures meet the programs criteria.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MISSISSAUGA, Ont.\u2014Officials from municipalities affected by last month\u2019s devastating ice storm are to meet in Mississauga, Ont., today to discuss &hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":44,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[18],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-672","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","category-news-ca","mauthors-the-canadian-press"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/672","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/44"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=672"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/672\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=672"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=672"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=672"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
