LOS ANGELES \u2013 Rosie O\u2019Donnell was delighted when \u201cEmpire\u201d creator Lee Daniels invited her to guest star on the Fox drama, then got a case of nerves.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019d watched the performances, and I\u2019m stunned every week because I can\u2019t believe the level of acting and the amount of (dialogue) and stories\u201d in each episode, O’Donnell said.<\/p>\n

Worried about \u201cnot being on my game,\u201d she worked with an acting coach before taping.<\/p>\n

\u201cI prepared for this like I\u2019ve never prepared for anything in my career, because I didn\u2019t want to disappoint and I understood the pace at which they work,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

In the episode airing 9 p.m. EST Wednesday, O\u2019Donnell plays Pepper O\u2019Leary, a tough criminal who shared a cell for years with Cookie Lyon, played by series star Taraji P. Henson.<\/p>\n

Cookie seeks out Pepper to help her find missing family members, including Cookie\u2019s son Hakeem (Bryshere Y. Gray). Pepper is living in Philadelphia and back in the \u201ccriminal business,\u201d O’Donnell said.<\/p>\n

She knows \u201cthe lowdown about what\u2019s going on in Philly\u201d and is in a position to help Cookie, the actress-comedian said.<\/p>\n

Playing her first baddie was \u201cliberating,\u201d and she was honored that Daniels envisioned her in the role and trusted her to handle it, she said.<\/p>\n

Daniels\u2019 call came a couple years after O\u2019Donnell bumped into him at a New York theater and complimented him on the 2009 Oscar-winning film \u201cPrecious,\u201d which Daniels directed.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was honored and shocked and thrilled\u201d when he called about the \u201cEmpire\u201d role, O\u2019Donnell said, adding that\u2019s she a fan of the show and tweets about it.<\/p>\n

Henson was \u201camazing\u201d to work with, she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s like dancing with (ballet\u2019s Mikhail) Baryshnikov, you have to be on point,\u201d O\u2019Donnell said. \u201cShe\u2019s extraordinarily gifted.\u201d<\/p>\n

But O\u2019Donnell received her own gracious kudos as well, from series star Gray.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe said, \u2018I just want to tell you that I have a lot of respect for who you are and how you use your voice socially,\u2019\u201d O\u2019Donnell recalled. \u201cHe said everything you would dream a 20-year-old kid \u2013 like the one at home on my couch, who never says that to me \u2013 would say to you.\u201d<\/p>\n
