MANILA \u2013 Several protesters against the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit<\/a><\/strong> were amused, while some were enraged when the Philippine National Police (PNP) played pop songs in an attempt to disperse them.<\/p>\n

As the 21 APEC leaders held their meetings at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC)<\/a><\/strong>, outside were hundreds of activists who joined the ongoing mass actions against the annual gathering.<\/p>\n

Trying to reach the venue of the meetings, the protesters tried to break through lines of police, who were equipped with riot shields and wooden batons.<\/p>\n

When the rallies started to get violent, the policemen fired water cannons \u2013 and played a \u2018demonstration playlist\u2019 on loudspeakers at full volume.<\/p>\n

Included in the playlist were pop singer Katy Perry\u2019s hit single \u201cRoar,\u201d David Guetta\u2019s \u201cSexy Bitch,\u201d Dolly Parton\u2019s \u201cIslands in the Stream,\u201d and the Bee Gee\u2019s \u201cHow Deep is Your Love,\u201d along with other songs aimed at distracting the activists who tried to chant \u201cJunk APEC\u201d at the top of their lungs.<\/p>\n

Feeling the beat, some of the anti-riot policemen tapped their batons against their shields to the tune of the songs.<\/p>\n

The protesters, however, were not in the mood to sing along.<\/p>\n

They regarded the actions as \u2018rude and desperate\u2019 and was suppression to \u2018the people\u2019s right to\u2026 free speech.\u2019<\/p>\n
