{"id":63267,"date":"2015-10-20T05:02:03","date_gmt":"2015-10-20T10:02:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/?p=63267"},"modified":"2015-10-20T05:02:31","modified_gmt":"2015-10-20T10:02:31","slug":"scientists-discover-faster-safer-method-for-analyzing-forensic-fingerprints","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/2015\/10\/20\/scientists-discover-faster-safer-method-for-analyzing-forensic-fingerprints\/","title":{"rendered":"Scientists discover faster, safer method for analyzing forensic fingerprints"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>CANBERRA, AUSTRALIA &#8211; \u00a0Australian scientists have created a new method of uncovering invisible fingerprints, in a find that could make forensic analysis a quicker and easier process.<\/p>\n<p>Published in the Advanced Materials journal on Tuesday, scientists at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) found that by adding a drop of liquid containing crystals to surfaces, forensic investigators were able to use a UV light to see fingerprints &#8220;glow&#8221; within 30 seconds.<\/p>\n<p>The effect creates a high-contrast print that allows investigators to take high-resolution photographs of the fingerprints, meaning an easier and &#8220;more precise analysis.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>CSIRO materials scientist Dr. Kang Liang said on Tuesday that the discovery could be used for more challenging when &#8220;dusting for prints&#8221; was not &#8220;appropriate&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>He also said the method would &#8220;save valuable time, costs and enhance investigations&#8221; when compared with the more traditional method.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;While police and forensics experts use a range of different techniques, sometimes in complex cases evidence needs to be sent off to a lab where heat and vacuum treatment is applied,&#8221; Liang said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our method reduces these steps, and because it&#8217;s done on the spot, a digital device could be used at the scene to capture images of the glowing prints to run through the database in real time.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The study undertaken by the CSIRO determined that tiny crystals attach themselves to the fingerprint residue, forming an &#8220;ultrathin coating&#8221; that is an exact replica of the fingerprint pattern left behind.<\/p>\n<p>Liang said as it was such a precise method of uncovering prints, it was extremely safe for investigators to use, and the print is less likely to be damaged when compared to the dusting method.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: small\">&#8220;Because it works at a molecular level it&#8217;s very precise and lowers the risk of damaging the print,&#8221; Liang said. <\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>CANBERRA, AUSTRALIA &#8211; \u00a0Australian scientists have created a new method of uncovering invisible fingerprints, in a find that could make &hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":44,"featured_media":63268,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[5],"tags":[128],"class_list":["post-63267","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-technology","tag-upload","mauthors-philippine-news-agency"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/63267","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/44"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=63267"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/63267\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/63268"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=63267"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=63267"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=63267"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
