A broken foot suffered by veteran winger Chris Higgins in Vancouver\u2019s first exhibition game means there\u2019s at least one spot open up front.<\/p>\n<p>Virtanen skated alongside Daniel and Henrik Sedin on the Canucks\u2019 first line, while McCann started on the wing with Brandon Sutter and Alexandre Burrows before dropping down the lineup before moving back to his natural centre position.<\/p>\n<p>Scoreless through 40 minutes, the Coyotes had a power play to start the third and Markstrom \u2013 tabbed to be Vancouver\u2019s No. 2 goalie behind Ryan Miller after fan favourite Eddie Lack was traded in the off-season \u2013 had to be sharp on Tobias Rieder\u2019s quick shot from the slot.<\/p>\n<p>Canucks forward Adam Cracknell, who scored in overtime in Vancouver\u2019s first pre-season game, then saw his shot on a 2-on-1 stopped by Smith five minutes into the final period before McCann struck on the power play.<\/p>\n<p>Virtanen and McCann are both 19 years old, meaning that they are too young to play in the AHL and would have to be returned to their junior teams if they don\u2019t make the Canucks\u2019 roster.<\/p>\n<p>Virtanen had the bigger impact early, delivering a hit on his first shift before taking a high-sticking penalty that Vancouver killed off.<\/p>\n<p>Markstrom made a nice pad stop on a deflection by Coyotes forward Shane Doan midway through the first, while Canucks defenceman Dan Hamhuis had a good chance at the other end.<\/p>\n<p>Coyotes forward Martin Hanzel moved in on a breakaway early in the second, but Markstrom made a nice glove save, and Smith snagged a Sven Baertschi effort on a 2-on-1 at the other end five minutes later.<\/p>\n<p>Notes: Smith finished with 23 saves&#8230; The Canucks visit the San Jose Sharks on Tuesday, while the Coyotes travel to Edmonton to take on the Oilers&#8230; Vancouver assigned six players to the AHL\u2019s Utica Comets earlier Monday, including forwards Cole Cassels and Nicklas Jensen.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>VANCOUVER \u2013 Jared McCann scored on the power play in the third period and Jacob Markstrom stopped 31 shots Monday &hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":33,"featured_media":62178,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[44],"tags":[35],"class_list":["post-62176","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-sports","tag-original","mauthors-joshua-clipperton","mauthors-the-canadian-press"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/62176","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/33"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=62176"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/62176\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/62178"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=62176"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=62176"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=62176"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
