MANILA — Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago wants to investigate a report indicating the possible suspension of some 100 workers of City Dreams Manila.<\/p>\n

The said suspension, according to the report, is amid the profit loses owing to the slowdown of the influx of clients.<\/p>\n

Santiago said that the suspension might set a\u00a0\u201cprecedent for other employers and business owners to suspend workers when convenient, with utter disregard for these workers\u2019 rights.”<\/p>\n

In the resolution, Santiago said that it is the protection of employees’ rights is the responsibility of the government.<\/p>\n

She added that the Department of Labor and Employment and other concerned agencies\u00a0\u201cmust strengthen existing legislation to prevent unwarranted suspension of workers.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe losses were allegedly due to gaming tax and license fees; inventories consumed; employee benefit expenses; depreciation and amortization; other expenses; payments to the Philippine parties; interest expenses; other finance fees; and amortization of deferred financing costs,\u201d the resolution said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is the duty of the government to protect workers from abusive practices of their employers,\u201d she said in the resolution.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
