{"id":58983,"date":"2015-08-13T20:55:19","date_gmt":"2015-08-13T12:55:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/?p=58983"},"modified":"2015-09-19T11:49:28","modified_gmt":"2015-09-19T03:49:28","slug":"stan-wawrinka-urges-action-against-nick-kyrgios","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/2015\/08\/13\/stan-wawrinka-urges-action-against-nick-kyrgios\/","title":{"rendered":"Stan Wawrinka urges action against Nick Kyrgios"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_58984\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-58984\" style=\"width: 599px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/CE6Bl5vUUAA08IU.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-58984\" src=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/CE6Bl5vUUAA08IU.jpg\" alt=\"French Open champion Stan Wawrinka (Photo from Wawrinka's Twitter account)\" width=\"599\" height=\"437\" srcset=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/CE6Bl5vUUAA08IU.jpg 599w, https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/CE6Bl5vUUAA08IU-300x219.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 599px) 100vw, 599px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-58984\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">French Open champion Stan Wawrinka (Photo from Wawrinka&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/stanwawrinka\" target=\"_blank\">Twitter account<\/a>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>MONTREAL \u2013 French Open champion Stan Wawrinka urged tennis authorities on Thursday to take action against Nick Kyrgios for an \u201cunacceptable\u201d comment during a match at the Rogers Cup.<\/p>\n<p>Wawrinka wrote on his Twitter account that the Australian\u2019s words were \u201cnot only unacceptable but also beyond belief.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A courtside microphone picked up the 20-year-old Kyrgios saying that Australian player Thanasi Kokkinakis had slept with a player who is reportedly Wawrinka\u2019s girlfriend.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is no need for this kind of behaviour on or off the court and I hope the governing body of this sport does not stand for this,\u201d the 30-year-old Wawrinka wrote on Twitter.<\/p>\n<p>Wawrinka, ranked fifth in the world, announced in April that he had separated from his wife, with whom he has a daughter.<\/p>\n<p>The Swiss player has since been linked with 19-year-old Donna Vekic of Croatia, who is ranked 127th.<\/p>\n<p>Vekic played mixed doubles with Kokkinakis, also 19 and ranked No. 76, at the 2014 Australian Open as a wild-card entry.<\/p>\n<p>Kyrgios beat Wawrinka on Wednesday when the Swiss retired with a lower-back injury while trailing 4-0 in the third set.<\/p>\n<p>In a post-match interview on court, Kyrgios said Wawrinka had provoked him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was getting a bit lippy at me so, I don\u2019t know, it\u2019s just in-the-moment sort of stuff,\u201d Kyrgios said. \u201cI don\u2019t really know, I just said it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The ATP rule book allows a fine of up to $10,000 for incidents of verbal abuse or unsportsmanlike conduct.<\/p>\n<p>The rules note that a \u201csingularly egregious, a single violation of this section shall also constitute the player Major Offense of Aggravated Behavior.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wawrinka\u2019s coach, Magnus Norman, also criticized Kyrgios, who has been at the center of controversy in recent weeks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was really really low Nick Kyrgios,\u201d Norman wrote on Twitter. \u201cHope for u that u have people around that will teach u a thing or 2 about life tonight. Very bad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At Wimbledon last month, Kyrgios was booed by spectators in a fourth-round loss to Richard Gasquet of France.
