PASADENA, Calif.\u2014The nudity that\u2019s a part of HBO\u2019s \u201cThe Girls\u201d has raised eyebrows. A question about it raised the ire of the show\u2019s producers.<\/p>\n

At a Thursday session with the Television Critics Association to promote the comedy\u2019s new season, a reporter asked Lena Dunham, the show\u2019s creator, executive producer and star, why her character was so often naked and for no apparent reason.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s because it\u2019s a realistic expression of what it\u2019s like to be alive, I think, and I totally get it,\u201d Dunham replied.<\/p>\n

Filmmaker Judd Apatow (the \u201cAnchorman\u201d movies, \u201cThe 40-Year-Old Virgin\u201d), who\u2019s an executive producer of the show about 20-something friends, jumped in, asking the reporter if he had a girlfriend and suggesting she wouldn\u2019t appreciate his question.<\/p>\n

At another point in the session, producer Jenni Konner said she was in a \u201crage spiral\u201d over what she characterized as an inappropriate accusation that a woman was \u201cshowing her body too much.<\/p>\n

The responses were less heated when the producers fielded questions about the show\u2019s lack of a regular minority character despite its setting in diverse New York City.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think that there\u2019s any reason why any show should feel an obligation to do that,\u201d Apatow replied.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the history of television, you could look at every show on TV and say, \u2018How come there\u2019s not an American Indian on this show?\u2019 \u2018How come there\u2019s not an Asian person on this show?\u201d\u2018 he said. \u201cIt really has to come from the story and the stories that we are trying to tell.\u201d<\/p>\n

Konner said producers are trying to address some of the criticism that they agreed with, and Dunham called the conversation one \u201cthat needs to happen in the world.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe need to talk about diversifying the world of television, and we are trying to continue to do it in ways that are genuine, natural, intelligent. But we heard all of that and hadn\u2019t really felt it deeply,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
