MANILA \u2013 Former Akbayan representative and University of the Philippines (UP) professor Walden Bello claimed that he was very much disappointed with the four possible presidential candidates for the coming national elections.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy great disappointment with all four candidates comes through clearly since our country really can come up with better people,\u201d Bello said in a Philippine Daily Inquirer report, referring to Interior Secretary Manuel \u201cMar\u201d Roxas II, Senator Grace Poe, Vice President Jejomar \u201cJojo\u201d Binay and Davao City Mayor Rodrigo \u201cRody\u201d Duterte.<\/p>\n

For Bello, President Benigno \u201cNoynoy\u201d Aquino III\u2019s preferred successor, Roxas, was a \u2018nice guy, harmless and clean but unfortunately hollow.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cHe reminds me of passages from T.S. Eliot\u2019s \u2018The Hollow Men,\u2019 especially the lines, \u2018Shape without form, shade without color, paralyzed force, gesture without motion,\u2019\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The former House representative also questioned Roxas\u2019 staying mum on several issues he was supposedly involved in, whereas he believed that what the country needed was a president who would \u2018attack vested interests and not one who will protect them.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cSo whose interests does he actually represent except the Makati Business Club which loves him? He will maintain the social status quo, and this is why he\u2019s harmless,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Bello described Poe, on the other hand, as a \u2018blank slate\u2019 and an \u2018anti-Binay\u2019 but not a candidate with a \u2018discernible pro-people program.<\/p>\n

\u201cI like Grace personally, but she\u2019s a blank slate\u2026 [She is] simply someone with a famous name [who could compete with Binay since Roxas] does not have the mass appeal to be able to do this,\u201d he said. \u201cWe don\u2019t really know what she stands for at this point.\u201d<\/p>\n

On Binay, Bello only noted that the Vice President was \u2018bad news,\u2019 with numerous unresolved corruption allegations against him and his political clan.<\/p>\n

\u201c[His presidency is the] second coming of the corrupt GMA (Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo) presidency\u2026 His approach is to say, \u2018Hey, I\u2019ll give you handouts like a cake on your birthday; all I want is for you to close your eyes while I also have my cake,\u201d he said, adding that Binay did not seem like he really understood poor people\u2019s struggles.<\/p>\n

And with the mayor\u2019s seeming disregard for basic human rights, Bello described Duterte\u2019s presidency as the \u2018second coming of the Marcos regime.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cUnfortunately, given the crime wave and the deterioration in effective policing that took place under P-Noy\u2019s buddy, former PNP (Philippine National Police) Chief Alan Purisima, many people are willing to give Duterte\u2019s iron fist a chance and suspend their concerns about due process and human rights\u2026 I think that this is still a minority, though,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
