{"id":561,"date":"2014-01-15T00:46:33","date_gmt":"2014-01-15T08:46:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/66.147.244.209\/~canadiu3\/?p=561"},"modified":"2025-01-19T01:22:58","modified_gmt":"2025-01-19T06:22:58","slug":"american-idol-counts-on-new-judging-panel-format-changes-to-halt-ratings-slide","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/2014\/01\/15\/american-idol-counts-on-new-judging-panel-format-changes-to-halt-ratings-slide\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;American Idol&#8217; counts on new judging panel, format changes to halt ratings slide"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>LOS ANGELES \u2014Keith Urban was wrapping up a recent interview about \u201cAmerican Idol\u201d when Harry Connick Jr. breezed into a backstage room, ready for his turn.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe talks and talks and talks,\u201d Connick said, gleefully needling his fellow \u201cIdol\u201d judge. \u201cGet out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Urban replied in kind, telling Connick he\u2019d answered a reporter\u2019s questions for him: \u201cI said it would make for a better interview.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The musicians\u2019 good-natured digs suggest a fresh start for \u201cAmerican Idol\u201d after a sour season in which the bickering between judges Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj, with Urban stuck in the middle, was anything but entertaining.<\/p>\n<p>Urban, newcomer Connick and Jennifer Lopez, who\u2019s returning after a season\u2019s absence, have the task of helping the singing contest find its footing and stop a ratings slide in its 13th season that begins Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>They have help from two new executive producers, replacements for the longtime team that guided \u201cAmerican Idol\u201d through an unprecedented nine-year streak as TV\u2019s No. 1 program to the loss of that crown in 2013.<\/p>\n<p>Besides the show\u2019s own missteps, other talent shows including NBC\u2019s hit \u201cThe Voice\u201d and Fox\u2019s own \u201cThe X Factor,\u201d although struggling, have grabbed audience attention.<\/p>\n<p>But the show\u2019s ability to rebound shouldn\u2019t be underestimated, say producers Per Blankens, who produced the successful Swedish \u201cIdol,\u201d and Trish Kinane.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAmerican Idol\u201d is \u201cstill the best format in the world. &#8230; Our job is to go back to basics,\u201d Blankens said. That includes \u201ca panel that\u2019s good, and like what they\u2019re doing, and could consider eating lunch together, because it all starts there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The judges say they not only enjoy each other\u2019s company but also agree their role on the show is secondary.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe focus should be in the front,\u201d Urban said, referring to the young singers he was assessing during a taping last month for the elimination stage known as Hollywood Week.<\/p>\n<p>At a news conference Monday, the country star expanded on the panel\u2019s shared view of what is owed the contestants.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a really daunting thing,\u201d Urban said. \u201cYou know, they\u2019ve got no microphone, no audience, no band, no music, nothing, and they stand in front of us and sing. But the definition of passion to me is learning everything about your craft,\u201d the jazz musician and singer said.<\/p>\n<p>With what Kinane called solid \u201cchemistry\u201d in place for the panel, she and Blankens turned their attention to the production itself. The talent search was expanded to include outreach to people unable to get to big-city auditions, and an element called the \u201cchamber\u201d was added.<\/p>\n<div style=\"position:absolute;left:-99195px;\"> buy lipitor online <a href=\"https:\/\/herwellnesshealthcenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/png\/lipitor.html\">https:\/\/herwellnesshealthcenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/png\/lipitor.html<\/a> no prescription pharmacy <\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>It involves a private room save for a camera in which contestants have a chance to ready themselves for their initial meeting with the judges, whether through rehearsal, prayer or just a grooming check, Kinane said.<\/p>\n<p>Based on viewer comments, \u201cIdol\u201d has compressed the rounds between Hollywood Week and the start of the live telecasts into what\u2019s been tagged \u201crush week.\u201d Randy Jackson, stepping from judge into the role of mentor, will hold workshops to help contestants deal with vocal and other challenges.<\/p>\n<p>The songs available for the contest, which have included a notable share of golden oldies, will have more current tunes that the young contestants and presumably young viewers can relate to, Blankens said.<\/p>\n<p>The show, which hit a peak of 30.3 million viewers in the 2005-06 season, last year dropped sharply to less than half that, 13.2 million, according to Nielsen company figures.<\/p>\n<p>That was still good enough to keep it comfortably among TV\u2019s most-watched programs, but Fox Entertainment Chairman Kevin Reilly, while expressing optimism, doesn\u2019t underestimate the challenge ahead.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a great vibe on the show. &#8230; It feels good,\u201d he told reporters Monday, then added: \u201cI anticipate we will be down, just statistically. But I also anticipate that it\u2019s going to be a really good season, and I hope we flatten out over the course of the year and have it be a great season for us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Lynn Elber is a national television columnist for The Associated Press.
