{"id":56098,"date":"2015-07-19T01:39:28","date_gmt":"2015-07-18T17:39:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/?p=56098"},"modified":"2015-07-19T01:48:33","modified_gmt":"2015-07-18T17:48:33","slug":"seven-companies-admit-to-making-illegal-corporate-donations-to-ex-mp-penashue","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/2015\/07\/19\/seven-companies-admit-to-making-illegal-corporate-donations-to-ex-mp-penashue\/","title":{"rendered":"Seven companies admit to making illegal corporate donations to ex MP Penashue"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_56099\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-56099\" style=\"width: 480px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/226816_546638292025037_295656928_n.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-56099\" src=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/226816_546638292025037_295656928_n.jpg\" alt=\"Peter Penashue (Facebook)\" width=\"480\" height=\"343\" srcset=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/226816_546638292025037_295656928_n.jpg 480w, https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/226816_546638292025037_295656928_n-300x214.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-56099\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Peter Penashue (Facebook)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>OTTAWA &#8212; Seven companies have acknowledged giving illegal donations to former federal cabinet minister Peter Penashue during the 2011 election campaign.<\/p>\n<p>Executives with the seven have struck &#8220;compliance agreements&#8221; with the commissioner of elections, in which they publicly acknowledge having made illegal contributions and promise to abide by the ban on corporate donations in future.<\/p>\n<p>The admission of responsibility does not constitute a criminal conviction by a court of law and does not create a criminal record.<\/p>\n<p>Penashue, elected as the Conservative MP for Labrador, resigned in 2013 amid allegations that his 2011 campaign had accepted illegal corporate donations and discounted airfares.<\/p>\n<p>He put his reputation to the test in a byelection but was defeated.<\/p>\n<p>Reg Bowers, Penashue&#8217;s official agent in the 2011 campaign, has since been charged with three counts of accepting illegal corporate contributions, an offence under the Canada Elections Act.<\/p>\n<p>Penashue has described Bowers as an &#8220;inexperienced volunteer.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The compliance agreements were published Friday in the Canada Gazette.<\/p>\n<p>Executives of Air Labrador Ltd., Dee-Max Innu Tautshuap Ltd., Innu-Chiasson Construction Ltd., Kakatshu Construction Ltd., Labrador Sales Ltd. and N.E.
