{"id":53394,"date":"2015-06-27T01:40:39","date_gmt":"2015-06-26T17:40:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/?p=53394"},"modified":"2015-06-27T01:40:39","modified_gmt":"2015-06-26T17:40:39","slug":"brandon-first-to-get-digital-mammography-in-manitoba-will-speed-up-diagnoses","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/2015\/06\/27\/brandon-first-to-get-digital-mammography-in-manitoba-will-speed-up-diagnoses\/","title":{"rendered":"Brandon first to get digital mammography in Manitoba; will speed up diagnoses"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_50013\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-50013\" style=\"width: 1000px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/shutterstock_206670595.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-50013\" src=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/shutterstock_206670595.jpg\" alt=\"(Shutterstock image)\" width=\"1000\" height=\"679\" srcset=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/shutterstock_206670595.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/shutterstock_206670595-300x204.jpg 300w, https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/shutterstock_206670595-900x611.jpg 900w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-50013\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">(Shutterstock image)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>WINNIPEG \u2013 Manitoba is bringing in digital mammography after years of delay.<\/p>\n<p>Health Minister Sharon Blady says it will reduce diagnostic wait time and bring new technology to detect breast cancer.<\/p>\n<p>With digital mammography, images are viewed on a workstation monitor and stored electronically rather than transferred to film.<\/p>\n<p>Blady says images captured in one region will be available to radiologists working in another, helping speed up turnaround times and diagnoses that may lead to faster treatment if needed.<\/p>\n<p>Brandon Regional Hospital will be the first in the province to get the new technology in September, while Blady says others will get theirs between October and April 2016.<\/p>\n<p>Manitoba is the last province to bring in digital mammography \u2013 there were plans to start converting analog machines last year but IT issues were blamed for the delay.<\/p>\n<p>Breast cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer among women in Manitoba with almost 900 diagnosed each year.<\/p>\n<p>The Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation encourages women to be screened digitally because it is better at detecting breast cancer.<\/p>\n<p>About 90,000 Manitobans have a mammogram every year. Approximately 50,000 are screening mammograms through the CancerCare Manitoba\u2019s BreastCheck program.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDigital mammography is a significant advancement in our technology for the detection of breast cancer,\u201d said Dr. Sri Navaratnam, president and chief executive officer, CancerCare Manitoba.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>WINNIPEG \u2013 Manitoba is bringing in digital mammography after years of delay.
