MANILA \u2013 Senator Ferdinand \u201cBongbong\u201d Marcos on Wednesday pushed for the passage of local bills naming two roads after the parents of President Benigno Aquino III.<\/p>\n

Marcos, chairman of the Senate committee on public works, sponsored House Bill No. 4400 and 4398 seeking to name the circumferential road in Iloilo City as \u201cPresident Cory C. Aquino Avenue, and the national highway along Iloilo diversion road as \u201cSenator Benigno S. Aquino Jr. Avenue,\u201d respectively.<\/p>\n

Marcos also sponsored House Bill No. 1042 aimed at naming a diversion road in Leyte as \u201cGovernor Benjamin \u2018Kokoy\u2019 T. Romualdez Diversion\u201d road.<\/p>\n

Based on the guidelines of the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP), proposed name of persons for roads must have historical and cultural significance and must contribute as well to the positive development of national pride through good examples.<\/p>\n

While the NHCP has a \u201c10-year rule\u201d policy, which means that at least 10 years should have been passed after the death of a person before he or she can be honored by naming a road after him or her, the commission waived the rule for Romualdez, who died only in February 2012, because of his valuable service and contribution.<\/p>\n

Marcos was the son of the late former President Ferdinand Marcos, a longtime political opponent of President Aquino\u2019s parents.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
