(Ching Dee \/ PCI)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>MANILA &#8212; Nearly five months after being declared one of the cities among the New7Wonders Cities of the world, the heritage city of Vigan in Ilocos Sur was officially inaugurated in a colorful lights show Thursday night.<\/p>\n<p>The ceremony, which was attended by top officials including Vice President Jejomar Binay and New7Wonders founder-president Bernard Weber, was held at the grounds of St. Paul Metropolitan Cathedral.<\/p>\n<p>Aside from the lights show, another highlight during the event was the unveiling of the bronze commemorative plaque presented to Vigan city\u2019s officials.<\/p>\n<p>The plaque was cast in the Kunstgie\u00dferei M\u00fcnchen, a famous foundry in the heart of Munich, Germany, where metal becomes memory using a combination of art and craft that dates back to ancient times.<\/p>\n<p>To recall, Vigan city, famous for the preservation of its Spanish-era architecture was declared among the New7Wonders Cities of the world last December 7, 2014.<\/p>\n<p>Results were announced on its website ending the year-long campaign of the New7Wonders Foundation, an organization looking to promote the beauty of the world as well as respect for cultural diversity.<\/p>\n<p>The foundation cited Vigan for its architecture which \u201c\u2026Echoes the fusion of cultural elements from the Philippines, China and Europe, creating a city that is without equal in Asia.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It also gave credit to Vigan being &#8220;the best-preserved example of a planned Spanish colonial town in Asia.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>New7Wonders Foundation is the same institution that endorsed and promoted the underground river in Puerto Princesa City as one of the New7Wonders of Nature.<\/p>\n<p>Aside from Vigan, the six other Wonders Cities include Beirut, Lebanon; Doha, Qatar, Durban, South Africa; Havana, Cuba; Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; and La Paz, Bolivia.<\/p>\n<p>Vigan is the first of the New7Wonders Cities to be officially inaugurated.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MANILA &#8212; Nearly five months after being declared one of the cities among the New7Wonders Cities of the world, the &hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":44,"featured_media":496,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[1482,95,79],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-48584","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-breaking","category-news-ph","category-travel","mauthors-azer-n-parrocha","mauthors-philippines-news-agency"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/48584","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/44"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=48584"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/48584\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/496"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=48584"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=48584"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=48584"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
