MANILA — The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) appealed anew to all motorists on Sunday not to hurt traffic enforcers as they are just performing their duties to apprehend traffic violators.<\/p>\n

“We are appealing to the motorists not to hit our traffic constables detailed on the streets since they are only doing their job of enforcing traffic rules,” MMDA Assistant General Manager Emerson Carlos said during the agency’s weekly radio program.<\/p>\n

Carlos was reacting to the attempt of a car driver, Robert Trinidad, to hit traffic constable Johnny Llena along Epifanio Delos Santos Ave. (EDSA) in Quezon City last week.<\/p>\n

Carlos said Llena flagged down Trinidad, who was driving a Hyundai Eon with license plate UIQ-526, for violating the number coding scheme.<\/p>\n

Instead of stopping, Trinidad sped off to escape, almost hitting Llena’s legs.<\/p>\n

\u201cImagine, number coding lang po ito. Maliit lang po ang multa dito. Alam naman po nang lahat ng motorista sa Metro Manila ang coding. Ilang taon na po natin itong ipinapatupad. Kung ginamit po ninyo ang inyong sasakyan (at coding), huhulihin po talaga kayo,<\/em>\u201d he said, adding that the fine for violating the number coding scheme is only PhP300.<\/p>\n

Aside from filing a case of reckless driving against Trinidad, Carlos said the MMDA has sent a letter to the Land Transportation Office (LTO) asking to revoke his license.<\/p>\n

He also warned erring drivers, who tend to speed away from authorities when they are being flagged down, that the MMDA can still get their identity by reporting them to the LTO.<\/p>\n

A total of 15 traffic constables have been involved in traffic altercations since January this year.<\/p>\n

Carlos said this is a reflection that some motorists do not give respect to the people who are enforcing traffic rules and regulations.<\/p>\n
