{"id":46399,"date":"2015-04-09T09:44:36","date_gmt":"2015-04-09T01:44:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/?p=46399"},"modified":"2015-04-09T09:44:36","modified_gmt":"2015-04-09T01:44:36","slug":"bmo-study-more-canadians-have-savings-plans-but-fear-they-arent-saving-enough","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/2015\/04\/09\/bmo-study-more-canadians-have-savings-plans-but-fear-they-arent-saving-enough\/","title":{"rendered":"BMO study: More Canadians have savings plans, but fear they aren&#8217;t saving enough"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/image4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-46511\" src=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/image4.jpg\" alt=\"image\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" srcset=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/image4.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/image4-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/image4-900x600.jpg 900w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>TORONTO \u2013 A new survey of Canadians found almost 20 per cent of respondents didn&#8217;t put aside a dime in 2014 and a further 40 per cent felt they were not saving enough.<\/p>\n<p>This year&#8217;s household savings report from BMO Financial Group says 31 per cent of respondents had a fixed savings plan in place that included monthly contributions.<\/p>\n<p>That was a significant increase from the previous year when only 19 per cent reported implementing such a plan.<\/p>\n<p>The BMO study also revealed that a third had less than $10,000 in savings.<\/p>\n<p>Money for vacations was the most common goal among savers, while 43 per cent were saving for retirement and 40 per cent for emergencies.<\/p>\n<p>Statistics Canada has found the household savings rate hit a five-year low of 3.6 per cent in the fourth quarter of 2014.<\/p>\n<p>Over the last 10 years, the average household savings rate was just four per cent, down from 7.9 per cent in the 1990s.<\/p>\n<p>The BMO survey was conducted between March 13 and March 16 with an online sample of 1,002 Canadians.
