LONDON\u2014Zayn Malik says he worries that he\u2019s let One Direction fans down by leaving the world-conquering boy band, but couldn\u2019t carry on in a role that made him unhappy.<\/p>\n

Malik quit the group this week, saying he wanted \u201cto be a normal 22-year-old.\u201d He had earlier pulled out of One Direction\u2019s world tour, citing stress.<\/p>\n

He told Friday\u2019s edition of Britain\u2019s Sun newspaper that \u201cI did try to do something that I wasn\u2019t happy doing for a while\u201d to keep fans happy.<\/p>\n

\u201cI only ever tried to do it for the fans, and it was only ever for them,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He said he felt upset that \u201cI may have let them down in some sort of way.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not that I\u2019ve turned my back on them or anything, it\u2019s just that I can\u2019t do that anymore because it\u2019s not real to me,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

And he said his bandmates had been \u201creally supportive\u201d of his decision.<\/p>\n

One Direction formed in 2010 after five teenagers\u2014Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson and Malik\u2014auditioned individually for the British TV talent show \u201cThe X Factor.\u201d Simon Cowell had the idea of putting them together as a boy band.<\/p>\n

They didn\u2019t win the competition, but they went on to top charts and win young hearts around the world.<\/p>\n

The four remaining members say they will carry on as One Direction.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey still want to do it for a while,\u201d Malik said. \u201cI think they\u2019re going to be cool.\u201d<\/p>\n
