{"id":4450,"date":"2014-03-17T20:47:55","date_gmt":"2014-03-18T03:47:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/?p=4450"},"modified":"2014-03-17T20:47:55","modified_gmt":"2014-03-18T03:47:55","slug":"many-children-miss-school-in-northern-chile-after-big-quake-aftershocks-rattle-region","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/2014\/03\/17\/many-children-miss-school-in-northern-chile-after-big-quake-aftershocks-rattle-region\/","title":{"rendered":"Many children miss school in northern Chile after big quake, aftershocks rattle region"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/santiago.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-4388\" alt=\"santiago\" src=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/santiago-300x155.png\" width=\"300\" height=\"155\" srcset=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/santiago-300x155.png 300w, https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/santiago.png 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>SANTIAGO, Chile &#8211; Many children stayed away from school in Chile&#8217;s northern coastal region Monday as aftershocks continued to rattle the area a day after a magnitude-6.7 quake hit and prompted brief evacuations due to tsunami fears.<\/p>\n<p>More than 100 aftershocks, including a tremor late Sunday of magnitude-6.2, had been recorded since the strong earthquake struck just offshore Sunday evening, the U.S. Geological Survey said.<\/p>\n<p>Most were imperceptible but a few unsettled residents of the coastal towns in northern Chile, leading some people to sleep in their cars or outdoors.<\/p>\n<p>The initial quake caused only minor damage, though officials briefly evacuated more than 100,000 people from coastal zones.<\/p>\n<p>Education officials in the Tarapaca region said about 60 per cent of students missed classes Monday.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re a seismic country and we have to return to our daily lives, we have to continue working,&#8221; Ricardo Toro, national director of Chile&#8217;s ONEMI emergency agency, said in encouraging people to return to normal activities.<\/p>\n<p>Chile is one of the world&#8217;s most earthquake-prone countries.
