Teoli Jr \/ Wiki Commons.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>KANE, Manitoba &#8212; The fire chief in a southern Manitoba rural municipality says it was the father of four children who died in an early-morning house fire who made the emergency call.<\/p>\n<p>The man saw smoke coming from his house as he was returning from work, Bernard Schellenberg, volunteer fire chief in the RM of Morris, said Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>He was not sure if the child&#8217;s mother was with the father or in the home.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The parents have been sent to hospital for observation and three of the other children are at a neighbour&#8217;s place,&#8221; Schellenberg said.<\/p>\n<p>RCMP said the blaze broke out near the tiny community of Kane, about 95 kilometres southwest of Winnipeg.<\/p>\n<p>Schellenberg, who was not at the scene, said the emergency call came in at around 12:15 a.m. and about 20 volunteer firefighters from nearby communities responded in four trucks.<\/p>\n<p>The two-story farmhouse was already engulfed in flames and smoke when crews arrived.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They went into a defensive strategy and they could not make entrance into the house due to heavy smoke and fire conditions.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Environment Canada indicates the temperature in the Morris area at the time was -27 C with the wind chill.<\/p>\n<p>Crews were still pouring water on the house Wednesday morning.<\/p>\n<p>The fire is under investigation by the Manitoba Fire Office and the RCMP, Schellenberg said.<\/p>\n<p>A &#8220;critical incident stress debrief&#8221; was being set up to help the volunteer firefighters who were at the scene, &#8220;so they can go through some of the emotions that come with a call like this,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our crews did the best they could with the conditions they had.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>KANE, Manitoba &#8212; The fire chief in a southern Manitoba rural municipality says it was the father of four children &hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":44,"featured_media":3143,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[1482,18],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-43505","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-breaking","category-news-ca","mauthors-the-canadian-press1"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/43505","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/44"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=43505"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/43505\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/3143"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=43505"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=43505"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=43505"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
