{"id":42789,"date":"2015-02-18T02:57:22","date_gmt":"2015-02-17T18:57:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/?p=42789"},"modified":"2015-02-18T02:57:22","modified_gmt":"2015-02-17T18:57:22","slug":"paralyzed-filipina-temporary-foreign-worker-ordered-to-leave-country-asks-for-compassion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/2015\/02\/18\/paralyzed-filipina-temporary-foreign-worker-ordered-to-leave-country-asks-for-compassion\/","title":{"rendered":"Paralyzed Filipina temporary foreign worker ordered to leave country, asks for compassion"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_42825\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-42825\" style=\"width: 720px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/maria-victoria-venancio.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-42825\" src=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/maria-victoria-venancio.png\" alt=\"Filipina temporary foreign worker Maria Victoria Venancio (screenshot from CTV News footage)\" width=\"720\" height=\"405\" srcset=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/maria-victoria-venancio.png 720w, https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/maria-victoria-venancio-300x169.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-42825\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Filipina temporary foreign worker Maria Victoria Venancio (screenshot from CTV News footage)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>EDMONTON &#8212; A disabled temporary foreign worker from the Philippines has been ordered to leave Canada but is asking that she be allowed to stay on humanitarian grounds.<\/p>\n<p>Maria Venancio was paralyzed in June 2011 when she was riding her bike to work and was hit by a car.<\/p>\n<p>She&#8217;s been issued an exclusion order, which means she must leave the country for at least a year.<\/p>\n<p>A decision about her removal is to be determined at a future hearing before the Canadian Border Services Agency.<\/p>\n<p>Chris Bataluk, Venancio&#8217;s lawyer, says she has filed an application to be allowed to stay in Canada as a permanent resident.<\/p>\n<p>He says Venancio wouldn&#8217;t get the same kind of health care treatment in the Philippines.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;She is working with her doctors and the 1\/8University of Alberta 3\/8 here and actually making some tremendous progress in her mobility,&#8221; Bataluk said Monday.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;She&#8217;s told me recently she&#8217;s been able to stand on her own, which from when we dealt with her car accident a few years ago was almost unimaginable.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Venancio said she was originally told by a doctor that she wouldn&#8217;t be able to walk again.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;But still right now I&#8217;m able to move around on my own, and I&#8217;m starting to be more independent,&#8221; she said. &#8220;Even though I&#8217;m in a wheelchair, I&#8217;m still hoping and trying to still help my family.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Venancio was an employee with McDonald&#8217;s. Her contract entitled her to some medical benefits, which she says she did not receive.
