{"id":3709,"date":"2014-03-08T08:20:23","date_gmt":"2014-03-08T16:20:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/?p=3709"},"modified":"2014-03-08T08:20:23","modified_gmt":"2014-03-08T16:20:23","slug":"china-foreign-minister-defiant-on-territorial-claims-wants-respect-from-us-for-positive-ties","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/2014\/03\/08\/china-foreign-minister-defiant-on-territorial-claims-wants-respect-from-us-for-positive-ties\/","title":{"rendered":"China foreign minister defiant on territorial claims, wants respect from US for positive ties"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>BEIJING\u2014China will never make concessions in territorial disputes with its neighbours, while good relations with the U.S. depend on Washington respecting Beijing\u2019s sovereignty claims, Foreign Minister Wang Yi said Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>Sounding a defiant note in his first national news conference since taking office a year ago, Wang touched on disputes with Japan, the\u00a0Philippines\u00a0and others that have sharpened tensions in the Asia Pacific.<\/p>\n<p>China has used its coast guard to assert its claim to the entire South China Sea and its island groups and has regularly confronted Japanese patrol boats surrounding a string of uninhabited East China Sea islands controlled by Tokyo but claimed by Beijing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will never bully smaller counties, yet we will never accept unreasonable demands from smaller countries,\u201d Wang told reporters at a briefing on the sidelines of the weeklong session of the National People\u2019s Congress, China\u2019s ceremonial legislature.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn issues of territory and sovereignty, China\u2019s position is firm and clear: We will not take anything that is not ours, but we will defend every inch of territory that belongs to us,\u201d Wang said.<\/p>\n<p>Wang took a similar tough stance on Japan, although he conceded the current standoff that has sent relations to a new low was not in the interest of either party. He said that Japan, however, was solely responsible for the impasse, partly as a result of leading public figures there questioning apologies made over Tokyo\u2019s World War II aggression.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn the two issues of principle\u2014history and territory\u2014there is no room for compromise.
