Berlin Police.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>MONTREAL\u2014Jurors deciding the fate of Luka Rocco Magnotta ended Day 5 of their deliberations on Saturday without reaching a verdict.<\/p>\n<p>They will return on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>Magnotta, 32, is charged with first-degree murder and four other offences in the slaying and dismemberment of Chinese engineering student Jun Lin in May 2012.<\/p>\n<p>The eight women and four men started their work on Tuesday and have written just two notes since then\u2014once to ask a legal question and once to seek technical help.<\/p>\n<p>Magnotta has pleaded not guilty by way of mental disorder and is trying to be found not criminally responsible.<\/p>\n<p>His lawyer says he is schizophrenic and couldn\u2019t tell right from wrong at the time of the slaying, while the Crown says Lin\u2019s slaying was planned and deliberate.<\/p>\n<p>The jurors sent a legal question Wednesday to Superior Court Justice Guy Cournoyer asking whether a personality disorder is a disease of the mind from a legal standpoint, something he confirmed.<\/p>\n<p>On Friday afternoon, they sent a note to the judge indicating they weren\u2019t able to view certain videos on the court-issued computer in the room where they\u2019re doing their work.<\/p>\n<p>Lin\u2019s father was at the courthouse Saturday awaiting the verdict.<\/p>\n<p>On the murder charge, the jury has four options: find Magnotta guilty of first-degree murder, second-degree murder or manslaughter, or find him not criminally responsible because of mental disorder.<\/p>\n<p>The judge told the jurors Monday that if they find the accused not criminally responsible, that verdict must be the same for all five charges.<\/p>\n<p>Besides the murder charge, Magnotta is charged with criminally harassing Prime Minister Stephen Harper and other members of Parliament; mailing obscene and indecent material; committing an indignity to a body; and publishing obscene materials.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MONTREAL\u2014Jurors deciding the fate of Luka Rocco Magnotta ended Day 5 of their deliberations on Saturday without reaching a verdict. &hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":44,"featured_media":31512,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[1482,18],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-36099","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-breaking","category-news-ca","mauthors-the-canadian-press"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/36099","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/44"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=36099"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/36099\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/31512"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=36099"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=36099"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=36099"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
