MANILA, Philippines \u2013 In a gesture aimed at making himself accessible to the people, Pope Francis has decided to use two open and non-bulletproof popemobiles during visit to the country in January 2015.<\/p>\n

Fr. David Concepcion, executive secretary of the Papal Visit Committee on Transportation said that the Pontiff wants to hear \u201cthe cries of people\u201d on the streets, and that the popemobiles \u2013 one for Mahila, and one to be used in Tacloban \u2013 should be \u201cvulnerable, open and accessible\u201d like the Catholic Church.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt will be open so he would be able to hear the cries of the people. It will be a reminder to us that the church listens to those on the streets, It will have no air condition. Whatever the people (at the venues) are feeling, he will also feel. So if it will rain and the people will get wet, he will also get wet,\u201d Concepcion said.<\/p>\n

One popemobile will be used in Manila, while the other car would be sent to Tacloban City, which the pontiff will also visit.<\/p>\n

Contrary to apprehensions of the potential risk involved, Jess Anthony Yu, Presidential Communications Operations Office\u2019s undersecretary for legislative, policy and legal affairs, said that the Pope\u2019s use of non-bulletproof cars \u201cwould not be a security nightmare.\u201d<\/p>\n

He pointed out that those involved in the logistics are \u201care also not only focusing on the popemobile but also on the route that he (Poe Francis) would be passing through.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are considering everything,\u201d Yu assured.<\/p>\n

The Presidential Security Group, Philippine National Police and the Armed Forces of the Philippines \u2013 as well as the Pope\u2019s personal security detail, the Swiss Guard \u2013 have all been tapped to bolster security during the Papal Visit.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
