{"id":35456,"date":"2014-12-14T22:43:07","date_gmt":"2014-12-14T14:43:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/?p=35456"},"modified":"2014-12-14T22:43:07","modified_gmt":"2014-12-14T14:43:07","slug":"phl-hails-vietnam-backing-on-its-arbitration-case-against-china","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/2014\/12\/14\/phl-hails-vietnam-backing-on-its-arbitration-case-against-china\/","title":{"rendered":"PHL hails Vietnam backing on its arbitration case against China"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_10407\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10407\" style=\"width: 1000px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/vietnam.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-10407\" src=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/vietnam.jpg\" alt=\"ShutterStock image\" width=\"1000\" height=\"657\" srcset=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/vietnam.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/vietnam-300x197.jpg 300w, https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/vietnam-600x394.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-10407\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">ShutterStock image<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>MANILA &#8212; The Philippines on Sunday lauded Vietnam\u2019s backing for its arbitration case against China when it submitted its position before a Netherlands-based arbitral tribunal where Manila is questioning the legality of Beijing\u2019s claim over nearly the entire South China Sea.<\/p>\n<p>In their position, Vietnam declared that the tribunal has jurisdiction over the Philippines\u2019 case, and by doing so, recognizes the arbitration process, which China is strongly opposing.<\/p>\n<p>Vietnam also objected to China\u2019s nine-dash line claim \u2013 a tongue-shaped encirclement that covers almost all of the resource-rich waters &#8211; and its actions that undermine the claims of its smaller Asian neighbors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Vietnamese position is helpful in terms of promoting the rule of law and in finding peaceful and nonviolent solutions to the South China Sea claims based on international law, including United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea,\u201d a Foreign Affairs statement said. \u201cThis promotes peace and stability in our region.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>China had beefed up its military and paramilitary presence in the waters and have embarked on several reclamation activities in contested features, stoking tensions anew in the South China Sea.<\/p>\n<p>Beijing\u2019s activities have alarmed foreign governments like the United States and Japan.<\/p>\n<p>An infuriated China immediately castigated Vietnam for its legal move, which contradicts its position on the disputes.
