Transportation not Deportation: End Transit Police <\/strong><\/p>\n

Collaboration with Canadian Border Services Agency<\/p>\n

When: Sunday December 14th at 4 pm.
\nWhere: Main Street Skytrain Station
\nThis Sunday, at 4pm, community groups are gathering inside Main Street
\nskytrain station, near the entrance downstairs, to hold a vigil for the
\nanniversary of Lucia Vega Jim\u00e9nez\u2019s suicide in Canadian Border Services
\nAgency (CBSA) custody, and to discuss transit police\u2019s growing involvement
\nin immigration enforcement.<\/p>\n

In total, three hundred and twenty eight people were reported to Canada
\nBorder Services Agency (CBSA) by Transit Police last year, one in five of
\nwhom faced a subsequent immigration investigation. This suggests that the\u00a0other four were simply racially profiled.<\/p>\n

One of these people was Lucia Vega Jim\u00e9nez, who later committed suicide in\u00a0a detention center. At the coroner’s inquest into her death, a transit
\npolice officer testified that he turned Lucia over to CBSA, in part,
\nbecause Lucia had an accent and that he believed \u201cshe wasn\u2019t originally
\nfrom Canada.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cTogether, the research shows that the surveillance of public
\ntransportation is well underway, with Transit Police happily collaborating
\nwith the CBSA in order to enforce immigration law,\u201d says Omar Chu, of
\nTransportation Not Deportation!, a new committee working on combating the\u00a0growing role of transit police in the deportation of migrants.<\/p>\n

Transit Police\u2019s own report similarly notes that \u201cTransit Police
\nrepresented a significant proportion of the Police Agency referrals to the
\nCBSA offices.\u201d<\/p>\n
