{"id":33441,"date":"2014-12-02T15:27:30","date_gmt":"2014-12-02T07:27:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/?p=33441"},"modified":"2014-12-02T23:29:40","modified_gmt":"2014-12-02T15:29:40","slug":"19-filipinos-die-each-hour-from-cardiovascular-disease","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/2014\/12\/02\/19-filipinos-die-each-hour-from-cardiovascular-disease\/","title":{"rendered":"19 Filipinos die each hour from cardiovascular disease"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_6376\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6376\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/DOH-logo.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6376\" src=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/DOH-logo-300x242.jpg\" alt=\"Wikipedia Photo\" width=\"300\" height=\"242\" srcset=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/DOH-logo-300x242.jpg 300w, https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/DOH-logo-600x486.jpg 600w, https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/DOH-logo.jpg 968w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6376\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Wikipedia Photo<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>MANILA \u2013 A study conducted by the Department of Health revealed that 170,000 Filipinos die each year from cardiovascular diseases.<\/p>\n<p>The figure is significantly higher than the 85,000 deaths from the same disease recorded more than 20 years ago.<\/p>\n<p>The study conducted last 2009 showed that every hour, 19 lives are taken by a disease of the heart and the vascular system, a cause of death that has been among the top causes of death in the country since 1993.<\/p>\n<p>This alarming rate encouraged the Philippine Heart Association (PHA) update their guidelines in the treatment and management of heart disease through the book entitled, \u201c2014 Philippine Clinical Practice Guidelines for the Management of Coronary Heart Disease.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The said manual is now available on print and will soon be released as a downloadable e-book on PHA\u2019s website.<\/p>\n<p>The book has cited experts in the field including those from the American College of Cardiology and the European Society of Cardiology.<\/p>\n<p>It aims to address problems on the limitations of heart health care in the Philippines and is penned by doctors for general practitioners, family physicians, ER doctors, nurses, internists, cardiologists and other medical personnel.<\/p>\n<p>The recommendations in the book are also classified as \u201cstrongly recommended,\u201d \u201crecommended,\u201d and \u201cmay be recommended\u201d for specific treatments and modalities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo many times these are easily forgotten; that\u2019s why some medical practitioners carry guidelines in their pocket. If you don\u2019t have a guideline, that would be like not having a roadmap when traveling. You may reach the destination, but you are unaware that there are better ways to get there. Sometimes you can even get lost\u2014at the risk of the patient\u2019s life,\u201d said Dr. Joel M. Abanilla, PHA president.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnyone of you can have a heart attack. This is a very deadly disease. Mortality rate for a heart attack that is poorly managed is very high.
