{"id":32890,"date":"2014-11-27T01:44:37","date_gmt":"2014-11-26T17:44:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/?p=32890"},"modified":"2014-11-27T01:44:37","modified_gmt":"2014-11-26T17:44:37","slug":"tax-agency-discloses-confidential-tax-info-to-cbc-blames-human-error","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/2014\/11\/27\/tax-agency-discloses-confidential-tax-info-to-cbc-blames-human-error\/","title":{"rendered":"Tax agency discloses confidential tax info to CBC, blames human error"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/shutterstock_174322073.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-33031\" src=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/shutterstock_174322073.jpg\" alt=\"tax audit\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" srcset=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/shutterstock_174322073.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/shutterstock_174322073-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/shutterstock_174322073-900x600.jpg 900w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>TORONTO &#8212; The Canada Revenue Agency confirmed late Tuesday that it has accidentally disclosed confidential taxpayer information to the CBC.<\/p>\n<p>The agency said the document was &#8220;accidentally released&#8221; through human error and acknowledges this &#8220;constitutes a serious breach of privacy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>CBC reported that the tax information contains data about hundreds of Canadians &#8212; many of them rich and famous &#8212; including their home addresses.<\/p>\n<p>The network said the 18 pages of spreadsheet data includes the value of tax credits they were granted covering the years 2008 to 2013.<\/p>\n<p>Donations made by such high-profile Canadians as author Margaret Atwood, former prime minister Jean Chretien, grocery magnate Frank Sobey, cartoonist Lynn Johnston, pollster Allan Gregg and others were included.<\/p>\n<p>The CRA said in a release late Tuesday that when it became aware of the breach, officials immediately contacted the CBC to retrieve the documents.<\/p>\n<p>The agency said the CBC &#8220;regrettably&#8221; chose to disclose names and a response from the network was not immediately available.<\/p>\n<p>However, in its story on the breach, CBC News made clear it was not disclosing much of the information it had.
