Her hair could be shinier, her waist could be smaller, her breasts could be bigger, his abs could be more pronounced, her thighs could be thinner, her skin could be fairer.<\/p>\n<p>The process of digitally enhancing someone&#8217;s appearance has become a habit, especially in the entertainment and advertising industries. Even the biggest Hollywood celebrities have fallen into Photoshop-hungry clutches of photo editors\u2014some by choice, some by sheer duty.<\/p>\n<p>In the recently concluded Miss World Philippines 2014 competition, the candidates&#8217; photos\u2014shot by &#8220;renowned photographer Pancho Escaler&#8221;\u2014have drawn ire from netizens in the Philippines and across the globe. Philippines)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>On the day of the coronation, October 12th, <a href=\"http:\/\/petapixel.com\/2014\/10\/12\/miss-world-philippines-portraits-poor-beauty-retouching-cultural-preference\/\">Michael Zhang of PetaPixel.com<\/a> published an article about the alleged manipulation of the candidates&#8217; photos. According to Zhang, a &#8220;tipster&#8221; informed them about the official portraits of the candidates being heavily Photoshopped. The same tipster said that the person responsible for the said images \u201cmust\u2019ve been bored or high when he post-processed these photos.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The pre-pageant photos were taken about a month before the coronation night. It was f<a href=\"https:\/\/ph.celebrity.yahoo.com\/news\/miss-world-philippines-2014--vote-for-the-yahoo-philippines-readers--choice-163407714.html\">irst published on Yahoo! Philippines on September<\/a> as part of the series of photos meant to promote the pageant. It was also in Yahoo! Philippines where the same photos were shown on October 1st in an <a href=\"https:\/\/ph.celebrity.yahoo.com\/photos\/miss-world-philippines-2014-official-portraits-1412162759-slideshow\/yahoo-1-lorraine-kendrickson-photo-1412163979504.html\">article questioning the post-processing of the images<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The photos inevitably circulated online, even making its way to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.psdisasters.com\/2014\/10\/miss-world-philippines-official-portraits.html\">www.psdisasters.com<\/a>\u2014a website dedicated to showcase Photoshop fails all over the world\u2014and big names like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cosmopolitan.com\/lifestyle\/news\/a32143\/miss-world-phillipines-photoshop-portraits\/\">Cosmopolitan<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.ca\/2014\/10\/16\/miss-world-philippines-photoshop_n_5996260.html\">The Huffington Post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_29174\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-29174\" style=\"width: 477px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Miss-World-Priscilla-Kimberley-Dela-Cruz.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-29174\" src=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Miss-World-Priscilla-Kimberley-Dela-Cruz.jpg\" alt=\"Miss World candidate Priscilla Kimberley Dela Cruz (Photographed by Pancho Escaler. Philippines)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&#8220;They&#8217;ve [the candidates] have been airbrushed within an inch of their lives,&#8221; said the PSDisaster article.<\/p>\n<p>The candidates&#8217; skin appears to have been airbrushed\u2014a commenter used the words &#8220;sandblasted smooth&#8221;\u2014to give off the appearance of smoother and somewhat fairer complexion.<\/p>\n<p>The contestants&#8217; facial features\u2014especially their eyes\u2014seems to have been manipulated as well to make them bigger. Perhaps the photo editor was trying to achieve a Zooey Deschanel look?<\/p>\n<p>Netizens did not mince their words when it came to the comments section.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s the pun-tastic &#8220;happy foundation day!&#8221; (referring to the heavy application of foundation as a make-up base on the candidates).<\/p>\n<p>Then there&#8217;s the sarcastic &#8220;please post also the name of the person who post-processed these photos. Philippines)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>And then there&#8217;s the exasperated voice of reason, &#8220;<em>hindi masamang mag-edit or mag-photoshop, kung realistic pa rin ang kalalabasan,,, malayo sa katotohanan ito&#8230; sana makita ito ng management ng beauty contest&#8230; nakakahiya [naman].<\/em>&#8221; (There&#8217;s nothing bad about editing photos or using photoshop if the output is still realistic. These photos are far from the truth. I hope the management of the beauty contest will see this.
