That\u2019s unforgivable.\u201d These are the words of the country\u2019s top magistrate, Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno.<\/p>\n<p>Serena made the statement on Thursday when she was introduced during a press forum as a chief justice who could \u201cprobably serve three more Presidents,\u201d with his term ending until 2030.<\/p>\n<p>But when asked if the word \u201cendure\u201d is a better term than \u201cserve,\u201d Sereno smiled and said, \u201cWell, I don\u2019t necessarily have to endure anyone, either.<\/p>\n<p>The Supreme Court was recently placed under fire after striking down the administration\u2019s Disbursement Acceleration Program (DAP) as unconstitutional.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, on talks about amending the constitution to keep the powers of the constitution in check, which President Aquino had been open about, Sereno said it was \u201csomething that is completely political.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf I believe the court has been too powerful, I would have been the first to say I would not have decided on [the] case,\u201d referring to the controversial DAP ruling.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI fully believe that the court has been within its bounds,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>Addressing the public\u2019s dissatisfaction with the country\u2019s current judicial sytem, Sereno said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are in a position to right now address the public\u2019s dissatisfaction with a justice system brought about by a perception that justice is slow and in favor of those who have the material wherewithals in life,\u201d Sereno said in her opening remarks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we can get to that point, people\u2019s anger against the justice system will not be so intense and people will believe that there can be fairness in life,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MANILA \u2013 \u201cI do not serve Presidents, excuse me \u2026.
