A pandemic, closed borders, lockdowns, economic crisis, a delayed election \u2026 but here we are at the end of a year like no other.<\/p>\n<p>So, if New Zealand were to receive a report card for its COVID-19 pandemic, according to the Foreign Policy publication.<\/p>\n<p>Global business leaders agree, report <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2020\/oct\/08\/new-zealands-covid-19-response-the-best-in-the-world-say-global-business-leaders\">The Guardian<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stuff.co.nz\/business\/123019858\/bloomberg-business-survey-puts-nzs-covid-response-out-in-front\">others<\/a>, citing a Bloomberg Media survey that looked at a number of factors href=\"https:\/\/www.doingbusiness.org\/content\/dam\/doingBusiness\/pdf\/db2020\/Doing-Business-2020_rankings.pdf\">best place<\/a> in the world for doing business.<\/p>\n<p>Transparency International says we are back to being <a href=\"https:\/\/www.transparency.org\/en\/cpi\/2019\">top of the class<\/a> (joint 1st with Denmark) in terms of being corruption free.<\/p>\n<p>The Economist says our internet (in terms of affordability and access) is also ranked <a href=\"https:\/\/theinclusiveinternet.eiu.com\/\">2nd best<\/a>, behind Sweden.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"align-center href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/reports\/how-to-end-a-decade-of-lost-productivity-growth\">19th<\/a> place.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, the Global Innovation Index, recorded New Zealand falling out of the top 25, to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wipo.int\/edocs\/pubdocs\/en\/wipo_pub_gii_2020.pdf\">26th position<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"align-center \"><img decoding=\"async\" of militarisation, Vision of Humanity says we are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visionofhumanity.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/GPI_2020_web.pdf\">ranked 2nd best<\/a>, behind Iceland.<\/p>\n<p>The Index for Economic Freedom (which covers everything from property rights to financial freedom) has us as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heritage.org\/index\/\">third best<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure \/><figcaption><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>A democratic place<\/h2>\n<p>The Democracy Index, which looks at considerations such as free and fair elections and influence of foreign powers, has us at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eiu.com\/topic\/democracy-index\">4th best<\/a> in the world. Norway, Iceland and Sweden do better.<\/p>\n<p>Excellence is also merited for our democracy in the Freedom in the World Index with a <a href=\"https:\/\/freedomhouse.org\/country\/new-zealand\/freedom-world\/2020\">score of 97 out of 100<\/a>, but we dropped one point due to the Christchurch terror attack.<\/p>\n<p>The Global Gender Gap Report notes an improvement of one place and lands us as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/reports\/gender-gap-2020-report-100-years-pay-equality\">6th most gender equal country<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The World Justice, Rule of Law, Project has us as <a href=\"https:\/\/worldjusticeproject.org\/our-work\/research-and-data\/wjp-rule-law-index-2020\">7th best<\/a> in the world, Without Borders has us as <a href=\"https:\/\/rsf.org\/en\/ranking\">9th best in the world<\/a>, but we fell two places due to recent concerns about the quality and independence of some media \/><figcaption><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Our wellbeing<\/h2>\n<p>In terms of falling out of the top ten countries, but still doing really well, the latest Human Development Index has us increase two places, to <a href=\"http:\/\/hdr.undp.org\/en\/content\/2019-human-development-index-ranking\">14th<\/a>, in terms of life expectancy, education and income.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s just ahead of the United Kingdom and the United States but well behind Australia in 6th place.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"align-center \"><img decoding=\"async\" Figures from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stats.govt.nz\/news\/latest-child-poverty-statistics-released\">the beginning of 2020<\/a> show about one in five Kiwi children (235,400) lived in relative poverty.<\/p>\n<p>So while New Zealand\u2019s report card contains a very impressive collection of clear excellences, and reflects some positive changes, we need to be vigilant and must seek to improve.
