RICHARD MADELO\/ PRESIDENTIAL PHOTO<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>MANILA<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 President Rodrigo Duterte late Monday night condemned the \u201cbrutal\u201d death of a mother and son in Tarlac in the hands of a policeman, saying the latter should rot in jail.<\/p>\n<p>In a taped speech, Duterte said that he was shocked after watching the viral video of the Tarlac shooting incident shown to him by Senator Christopher \u201cBong\u201d Go.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am sure that by now, he should not be allowed to go out because double murder<em>\u00a0\u2018yon eh<\/em>\u00a0(that\u2019s double murder). Double murder is a serious offense, a grave offense. So from the time you are arrested up to the time that you are haled to court to answer for the death of those two persons, innocent ones,\u00a0<em>walang<\/em>\u00a0bail\u00a0<em>ka<\/em>\u00a0(that has no bail),\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo<em>\u00a0\u2018pag nahuli ka, dire-diretso na \u2018yan<\/em>\u00a0(when you get caught, you head straight to jail). And I don\u2019t think that you can escape the rigors of justice because\u00a0<em>nakuha sa TV pati ako napanganga<\/em>\u00a0(it was caught on TV, even I was surprised),\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Duterte rejected the policeman\u2019s abuse of power, noting that he was exhibiting authority while in plainclothes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s unfair and brutal\u00a0<em>masyado<\/em>\u00a0(too brutal).<em>\u00a0Kung ako ang nandiyan, ewan ko lang<\/em>\u00a0(If I were there, I don\u2019t know). I don\u2019t know\u00a0<em>pero<\/em>\u00a0I do not &#8212; I do not like oppression\u00a0<em>at \u2018yang nag-ano ng tao &#8212; papahirapan niyo ang tao<\/em>\u00a0(and making people suffer). Usually\u00a0<em>kasi itong pulis<\/em>\u00a0(these policemen) you tend to exhibit your authority even in matters not connected with police work,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He described the cop as \u201ccrazy\u201d, wondering how he passed his neuropsychiatric examinations, which is required of police applicants.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cIsa lang itong klaseng pulis na \u2018to. May sakit ito sa utak. Topak<\/em>\u00a0(This policeman is one of a kind. He\u2019s sick in the head). And I\u2019m just wondering why he was able to &#8212;\u00a0<em>nakalusot sa<\/em>\u00a0(pass the) neuro,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Duterte also urged the Philippine National Police to make sure that he does not get out of detention.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019d like to call the PNP: Be sure that he is detained ha. He should not be allowed to go out\u00a0<em>kasi<\/em>\u00a0(because that\u2019s a) serious offense \u2018yan. There\u2019s no bail,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Following the cop\u2019s decision to turn himself in, Duterte reminded the country\u2019s police force to perform their duty in line with the law.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201c\u2018Di ba sinabi ko<\/em>\u00a0(Didn\u2019t I say): You do it right, I\u2019m with you. You do it wrong, and there will be a hell to pay.\u00a0<em>Iyon ang sinabi ko sa aking<\/em>\u00a0(That\u2019s what I said during my) [State of the Nation Address],\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He said that cops who abuse their authority by harming or killing others will not be covered by his promise to protect them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo your duty enforce the law. Your actions must be in accordance with the law. You do not follow the law,\u00a0<em>mag-<\/em>salvage\u00a0<em>ka, magpatay ka diyan<\/em>\u00a0(if you murder someone), then I\u2019m sorry, that is not part of the agreement of how we should do our work,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Police Senior M\/Sgt. Jonel Nuezca shot dead Sonya Gregorio, 52 and her son Frank Anthony, 25, after an altercation in Paniqui, Tarlac last Sunday. The video quickly went viral and sparked outrage on social media.<\/p>\n<p>Nuezca later surrendered to authorities.
