MANILA<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 President Rodrigo Roa Duterte lashed back at the opposition and former Senator Antonio Trillanes IV for \u201cdoing nothing but politicking\u201d with only one year and five months left before the 2022 elections.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe things that you would know,\u00a0huwag kayong maniwala diyan sa oposisyon. Walang ginawa \u2018yan, gusto lang \u2018yang bumalik<\/em>\u00a0(Don\u2019t believe the opposition. They did nothing, they just want to return),\u201d Duterte said in his Talk to the People late Wednesday night.<\/p>\n

Duterte said the opposition dwells on negative issues to make it appear that his present administration has done nothing to address the country\u2019s problems.<\/p>\n

\u201cIto wala itong ginawa kung hindi mamulitika. Tama \u2018yung sabi ni<\/em>\u00a0Bong (They do nothing but politicking. [Senator] Bong [Go] is correct that \u2018If you want to appear white, you paint the other person black.\u2019 Painting the other guy black so that you would appear white.\u00a0Iyan ang ginagawa nila. Pinipinturahan kami ng itim para bumango sila, maputi sila<\/em>\u00a0(That\u2019s what they are doing. They paint us black so that they will appear white),\u201d Duterte said.<\/p>\n

He lambasted Trillanes for saying that the President must be “trembling in fear” after International Criminal Court (ICC) prosecutor Fatou Bensouda’s office released a report saying there was “reasonable basis” to believe the Duterte administration committed crimes against humanity in the campaign against illegal drugs.<\/p>\n

\u201cWala itong ginawa kung hindi mag<\/em>-exhibition.\u00a0Wala itong nagawa kung hindi manira ng tao<\/em>\u00a0(He [Trillanes] did nothing but to display himself. He did nothing but to defame other people),\u201d Duterte said.<\/p>\n

Duterte said he is not afraid to be imprisoned and even die for his principles.<\/p>\n

\u201cKung iyang prinsipyo ko na \u2018yan ikamatay ko, okay ‘yan sa akin. Ipakulong ako habangbuhay, okay sa akin ‘yan. Ginagawa ko ang tama<\/em>\u00a0(If those principles will be the death of me, it\u2019s fine by me. If I\u2019m sentenced to life imprisonment, it\u2019s fine as long as I did what was right),\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He said Trillanes won as senator in 2007 while in jail due to \u201cbacklash\u201d in the administration of then President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.<\/p>\n

Duterte said if Trillanes is intelligent, why wasn’t he elected as President.<\/p>\n

“Trillanes,\u00a0kung<\/em>\u00a0bright\u00a0ka sa akin, kung mas marunong ka, ikaw na sana ang nagdadaldal dito, hindi ako. Iyan ang totoo<\/em>\u00a0(Trillanes, if you’re brighter than me, if you’re better, you should be talking here, not me. That’s the truth),” he said.<\/p>\n

He also criticized the former senator for linking presidential son, former Davao City vice mayor Paolo “Polong” Duterte to the illegal drug trade.<\/p>\n

\u201cTapos sabi dito, turo dito,<\/em>\u00a0drug lord\u00a0dito<\/em>, drug lord\u00a0doon. Pati \u2018yung mga anak ko, pati \u2018yung anak ko na maliit, dalagita. Anong nangyari? Wala ni isa. May napakulong ka ba,<\/em>\u00a0Trillanes?\u00a0Sino? Sinong napakulong mo? O nandiyan pa rin sila<\/em>\u00a0(Then you keep on accusing drug lord here and there, including my son, even my daughter. What happened? You have not proven, even one. Have you sent someone to jail? They are still there),\u201d Duterte said.<\/p>\n
