(Shutterstock photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>MANILA<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 The decision of a United Nations body reclassifying marijuana (cannabis) as a less dangerous drug would not affect the Philippines&#8217; policy outlawing its use, the country&#8217;s anti-narcotics agencies said on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>In a joint statement, the Dangerous Drugs Board (DDB) and the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) said the government still has the jurisdiction relative &#8220;to classifying and regulating&#8221; cannabis at the domestic level.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As previously stated by the DDB, the decision will have no immediate impact in terms of drug control,&#8221; they said.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, the United Nations Commission on Narcotic Drugs (UN-CND) removed marijuana from Schedule IV of the 1961 Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs, a list of the world&#8217;s most dangerous drugs.<\/p>\n<p>Despite its removal from Schedule IV of the international drug control convention, PDEA and DDB said marijuana remains to be a dangerous drug under Schedule I.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Convention limits exclusively to medical and scientific purposes the production, manufacture, export, import, distribution of, trade-in, use, and possession of Schedule I substances,&#8221; they said.<\/p>\n<p>Also, the medical preparations or products with cannabis, however, still need to acquire and comply with the regulatory control requirements from PDEA, Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and other government agencies.<\/p>\n<p>The two agencies also said cannabis is still classified as a dangerous drug under Republic Act No. 9165 or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The unauthorized importation, sale, possession, cultivation, and use of cannabis remain to be punishable under the law,&#8221; they said.<\/p>\n<p>PDEA, meanwhile, assured that they would continue to enforce the law &#8220;and enjoin the public to abide by the law&#8221;.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MANILA\u00a0\u2013 The decision of a United Nations body reclassifying marijuana (cannabis) as a less dangerous drug would not affect the &hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":44,"featured_media":136580,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[16,95],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-278165","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-news","category-news-ph","mauthors-christopher-lloyd-caliwan","mauthors-philippine-news-agency"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/278165","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/44"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=278165"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/278165\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":278166,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/278165\/revisions\/278166"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/136580"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=278165"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=278165"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=278165"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
