(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/PresSpokespersonPH\/photos\/1291601777841538\">File photo: Office of the Presidential Spokesperson\/Facebook<\/a>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>MANILA<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Malaca\u00f1ang is urging the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) to ensure the protection of the one-year-old child of Amanda Echanis, a suspected New People&#8217;s Army (NPA) leader who was arrested in Baggao, Cagayan last Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque expressed hope that Echanis\u2019 child would not suffer the same fate as River, the three-month-old daughter of detained activist Reina Mae Nasino.<\/p>\n<p>River, who was separated from her mother after birth, died due to acute respiratory distress syndrome last Oct. 9.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell,\u00a0<em>sana po ay hindi na maulit iyan<\/em>\u00a0(I hope it won\u2019t happen again). But I\u2019m calling upon the DSWD to take steps to ensure that the welfare of the child will be protected,\u201d he said in a press briefing from Palawan.<\/p>\n<p>Roque, a lawyer, said it is the government\u2019s mandate to provide due care to children.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cHindi po kasi dahilan iyon na palibhasa may anak ka, hindi ka makukulong at hindi ka masa<\/em>-subject\u00a0<em>sa proseso<\/em>\u00a0(Having a child does not exempt you from being detained or subjected to process). But it is always the rule that the government will take steps for the best interests of the child,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>In a TV interview, Philippine National Police chief Gen. Debold Sinas said it was Amanda who insisted to bring her baby to the police station after she was arrested.<\/p>\n<p>He, however, said social workers were present there to assist Amanda and her child.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Sinas denied that the firearms and explosives seized during an operation that led to the arrest of Amanda were planted.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201c\u2019Yung sinabi nila na<\/em>\u00a0planting (of evidence)\u00a0<em>hindi po totoo yun kasi papaano ka mag-plant ng mga baril na \u2018to mga bago, mga<\/em>\u00a0high-caliber<em>\u00a0mahirap po mag<\/em>-plant\u00a0<em>noon sa bahay n\u2019ya yun eh<\/em>\u00a0(What they claim as planting of evidence is not true because how would you be able to plant these new and high-caliber guns. It would be difficult to do that in her house),\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Amanda is the daughter of Randall Echanis, Anakpawis chairperson and National Democratic Front of the Philippines peace consultant.
