{"id":27634,"date":"2014-10-02T12:33:48","date_gmt":"2014-10-02T04:33:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/?p=27634"},"modified":"2025-01-14T23:42:34","modified_gmt":"2025-01-15T04:42:34","slug":"russia-upset-over-canadian-visa-denials-for-delegates-to-space-conference","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/2014\/10\/02\/russia-upset-over-canadian-visa-denials-for-delegates-to-space-conference\/","title":{"rendered":"Russia upset over Canadian visa denials for delegates to space conference"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/shutterstock_219709441.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-27635\" src=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/shutterstock_219709441.jpg\" alt=\"shutterstock_219709441\" width=\"1000\" height=\"579\" srcset=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/shutterstock_219709441.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/shutterstock_219709441-300x173.jpg 300w, https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/shutterstock_219709441-900x521.jpg 900w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Canada\u2019s refusal to allow Russian delegates to attend a prestigious international astronautical symposium has angered Moscow, which said the decision flies in the face of international space co-operation and amounts to politicizing space exploration over the conflict in Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesman for the Russian embassy on Tuesday called Ottawa\u2019s decision to deny visas for the delegates\u2014including one of the country\u2019s most renowned astronauts\u2014unfortunate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn this regard, we can only express regret that a number of members of the Russian delegation did not get their visas,\u201d Kirill Kalinin, second secretary at the Russian embassy in Ottawa, told The Canadian Press.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis act unfortunately does not bring benefit to the Russian-Canadian bilateral relations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ottawa initially declined to discuss the issue, citing privacy concerns, but on Tuesday, a spokeswoman for Citizenship and Immigration Canada confirmed some applications were denied, while others were still being reviewed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEach will be assessed on its merits by professional, non-partisan public servants in accordance with Canada\u2019s security and immigration laws,\u201d Nancy Caron said in an email.<\/p>\n<p>An official with Roscosmos\u2014the Russian space agency\u2014said only two of its 10-strong delegation received Canadian visas for the 65th International Astronautical Congress\u2014both of them translators who were the last to apply.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFailure to obtain visas for Russians is clearly politically motivated,\u201d the official told the Interfax\u00a0news\u00a0agency.<\/p>\n<p>On Monday, The Canadian Press reported how the absence of the Russians had blindsided the president of the Canadian Space Agency, Walter Natynczyk.<\/p>\n<p>The retired general said he had only just learned about the visa issue.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI guess I\u2019m equally surprised,\u201d Natynczyk said. \u201cBefore I come to any conclusions, I would like to know exactly how it transpired.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, the Moscow Times said famed cosmonaut Sergei Krikalev\u2014who spent 10 months aboard the orbiting Mir space station in 1992\u2014was among the Russians denied visas to attend the week-long conference in Toronto, considered the\u00a0world\u2019s biggest space gathering. I apologize for this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jack Harris, a New Democrat MP, attended the congress\u2019 opening sessions. He said Tuesday the absence of the Russian and Chinese space leaders was keenly felt.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it was significant from an international relations point of view,\u201d Harris said.<\/p>\n<p>But he noted the conference has been running for 65 years and has been apolitical, something that the visa dust-up isn\u2019t likely to change.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cQuestions were raised whether it says anything about the future of collaboration but the response by the leadership there was that they didn\u2019t see that as a consequence,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Canada has previously taken a hard line against Russia space-wise. In April, the government called off the launch of a Canadian communications satellite on a Russian rocket citing \u201ccurrent events in the Ukraine.\u201d Ottawa has yet to say when it might approve the launch, a spokesman for the satellite company said Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>The Canadian Aeronautics and Space Institute is hosting the showcase congress.
