ALBERTO ALCAIN\/ PRESIDENTIAL PHOTO<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>MANILA<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 President Rodrigo Duterte on Tuesday night threatened to slash the funding of the University of the Philippines (UP) if students skipped classes to join rallies.<\/p>\n<p>In a taped speech, Duterte told students to stop schooling if they were there to supposedly be recruited by communist rebels.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cIyong mga eskwelahan,<\/em>\u00a0UP? Fine.\u00a0<em>Maghinto kayo ng aral<\/em>\u00a0(Schools, UP? Stop schooling). I will stop the funding,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The President said students didn\u2019t know better than to join anti-government protests.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cNandiyan \u2018yan, wala na ginawa itong ano kundi mag<\/em>-recruit\u00a0<em>ng mga komunista diyan. Tapos nag-aaral kayo, ang gusto ninyong binibira ang gobyerno. Masyado namang nakasuwerte kayo. Huwag talaga kayong matakot \u2013 manakot<\/em>\u00a0rather,\u00a0<em>kasi<\/em>\u00a0I will oblige you (That\u2019s already there, they have done nothing except to recruit communists. You go to school then criticize the government. You\u2019re too lucky. Don\u2019t threaten me because I will oblige),\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Duterte also slammed students from Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) for threatening to go on a mass strike until the government assists communities affected by recent typhoons.<\/p>\n<p>He said ADMU students should also stop schooling and make better use of their time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStop schooling. That will save money for your parents. Better make use of your time anywhere,\u201d Duterte said.<\/p>\n<p>He told them to allow the national government to do its job in responding to calamities and the health crisis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou are taking the cudgels of the poor ahead of your time. That is not your worry. That is the worry of government.\u00a0<em>Kami, sabi ko, nagtatrabaho kami.<\/em>\u00a0Government workers\u00a0<em>kami<\/em>\u00a0(I said, we\u2019re working. We\u2019re government workers),\u201d Duterte said.<\/p>\n<p>He defended the government\u2019s typhoon response, daring them to wait for the next typhoon and check on the assistance given.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#8217;d suggest you stop schooling. Until<em>\u00a0mabakunahan lahat ng Pilipino<\/em>\u00a0(until every Filipino is inoculated with a vaccine), you resume your duty.
